# Lang team council representative proposal *This document is authored in my role as facilitator for the lang-team selection. The process so far was candidate nomination and a [write-up](https://hackmd.io/3fI-GUFcTOethmImJv48ow?edit)) exploring the options. I am now recommending a candidate; this selection must be confirmed by lang-team members in a non-objecting consensus.<br> &mdash; nikomatsakis* Based on conversations with the candidates, stakeholders across the teams, and my own judgment, I propose TC as the lang team's council representative for the upcoming term (Sep 2024-Sep 2025). I also strongly encourage Jack Huey to stay involved with the council, and in particular to continue to drive the initiatives that he discussed wanting to pursue (finding the best way to use council money, paying down organizational debt). I think it would be good precedent to see those items being driven forward from outside the council. Reasoning: * *The council is young and still finding its way; rotation can help.* TC has a good track record of helping "debug" organizations and helping them function more effectively. His focus on transparency is a good match for the results of the [council survey](https://blog.rust-lang.org/2024/08/26/council-survey.html), which highlight the need for better awareness of what the council is doing. * *The council was always meant to function primarily via delegation.* One challenge for the council has been finding interested and experienced people to delegate *to*. Jack, as someone who served on the council and whose has a lot of interest in improving how Rust functions, would be well-suited to being an owner of council initiatives. Counterarguments: * *We want to give Jack time to finish up what he started.* Indeed we do! But we also think TC could benefit the council, and hope that Jack is able/willing to continue his quality work from outside the council. * *Jack's experience on the council will help him "hit the ground running".* However, TC has been attending meetings and is generally familiar with how the council works. * *TC does a lot of things, we don't want him to burn out or have less time for lang things.* This is true, but we trust TC to monitor his own time. Further notes: It was suggested that a quality setup would be TC + Jack continuing to rotate, so as to combine freshness and experience. While there is no need to think now about who should serve starting Sep 2025, and certainly no reason to pre-commit, it's an interesting though experiment I thought I would share.
