# Reforesting Earth with RMRK NFTs

Forests are crucial resources for addressing Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable production and consumption, poverty alleviation, food security, biodiversity conservation, and climate change. The benefits of forests go well beyond forest boundaries and help maintain suitable conditions for life on Earth.

RMRK, as an environment-concious community will contribute to reforesting earth. We will do so by utilising our technology to bring together all those who want to do the same.

## Description
The project started as a partnership between [RMRK](https://rmrk.app) and [RMTerra](https://www.rmterra.org/), where RMTerra provided a plot of land and manpower for reforestation, and RMRK helped finance the reforestation.

Rather than treat the sales of the treeNFTs as just another collection on Singular, we propose a spin-off project titled **Forest Shepherd**. This is a project that is somewhat similar to Kanaria but focused on reforresting the earth.

Thus, where Kanaria had birds, FS will have trees. Where Kanaria focused on building a metaverse, FS will focus on reacting on and impacting on the real world actions and events.

Rather than tying this project and Kanaria metaverse, we propose splitting them (at least for now).

The reasons for splitting it are manyfold:
1. Enables greater focus on the enviromentally-conscious nature of the project.
2. Enables greater flexibility and customization to maximize appeal to target audience. For example, there could be a dedicated UI that allows sheperds to see at a glance the area of forest they are responsible for planting and the equivalent CO2 reduction.
3. Expands available target market to be much wider than the KSM community as the branding will be layer-1 neutral.
4. Positions RMRK 2.0 without even trying, making it a far more convincing pitch for interested parties.

RMTerra will plant 2400 trees of sapling age in their plot of land in Portugal. Each tree is one of selected species.

## NFTs
NFTs that represent trees have different properties.

Uniqeness of a tree is represented by trunks and crowns: 7 crowns * 1000 hues * 7 trunks * 1000 hues: 49 million unique trees
Everything else is changeable and equippable: skies, backgrounds, grounds and decorations.

## The process

### Initial sale
At the time of the sale, there will be trees that are already planted. We can auction these off. They come with the land plot, and all details are known about them. Planted trees are all in sapling sage, only 2 or 3 months old.

Kanaria had eggs that hatched into birds. Eggs had 4 grades, but within a grade they all looked alike and you didn't know which bird and items you are getting from any egg. This created a surprise effect when the birds hatched. We can mimic this mechanic for the trees that are not yet planted.

We will sell germplasm that germinate and grow into trees/a forest (since not all replantings are done by seeds, they usually call this "germplasm").
Initially we will sell tree packets.


Instead of selling seeds of specific species of trees, we will just sell unlabeled packets that will turn into one or more trees. You can buy unlimited amount of these.

### Packet opening
After the sale there will be a packet opening process where each packet will turn into a one or more trees of different age (germplasm, seedling, sapling or a budding tree) and different species (Cypress, Ash, Cherry, Parasol Pine, Celtis Australis, ...).

First 330 packets sold can be set to contain trees planted by RMTerra. This means they will produce trees in sapling stage and will be sold at higher price, especially the ones that are already planted.

The number, age, species and any other property of trees coming out of the rest of the packets will be randomly generated, but it will take into account real world rarity of each property. This is important because the age and species of the tree will impact the time and place where it can be planted.

### Acquiring land
First land available for planting is the one by RMTerra. When we find more land, we will sell treeNFTs that this land can take. So, after planting all the trees in this land, we will find other individuals and organisations like RMTerra to plant the rest of treeNFTs.

### Secondary issuance
After the initial sale packets are opened, and more land is acyired, anyone will be able to buy mint more trees by bidding for it:
- germplasm: 0 years old
- seedling: 2 months old
- sapling: 1 year old
- budding: 2 years old

Users can buy unlimited amount of these at the given price equivalent.
Trees in flowering and ripening stage are not sold. They have to be grown.

### Planting season
When you purchase a treeNFT, the revenue is used to purchase and plant new trees and pay a fee to **Forest Keepers**. Forest Keepers, like RM Terra are people and organizations that own, manage or have other rights and access to a land that can be reforested. They get reimbursment for the cost of planting each tree, as well as a fee for keeping the forest on their land.

### Forest DAO
A portion of revenue from NFT sales will be placed in a treasury controlled by the Sherpards DAO. Every tree holder will be a part of this DAO. Selling your tree revokes your access.

The main purpose of Sherpards DAO is to reforest earth in a sustainable way--as well as champion other causes that are necessary to reverse climate change. It will find more land owners, such as RM Terra and onboard them into the program with the goal to become the biggest forest grower in the world.

A portion of funds in the DAO's treasury will be used for staking, to generate yield for future projects.

## A few ideas

1. All trees are marked and their liveness is being regularly checked. If need be, buyers may demand a check before a purchase. If a tree dies, its NFT representation also dies and your forest decreases.
2. You get extra points if your trees are located near eachother, making up a single uninterupted forest. However, all your trees are counted towards your forest size.
3. Our Forest Shepherds get ability to show the size of their forest in a simple way to large audience on Twitter, just like adding ENS domain to your Twitter bio. This way they can promote the project and show that they are contributing to healing of the Earth.

Instead of token, we will be selling off germplasm NFTs for the initial sale. On the other hand, Forest Keepers will sell land plot NFTs, so our Forest Shepherds can plant their germplasm on it.

2.1. **Enable anyone participate in the initial sale, not just KSM community**
This way we get much larger number of people invested in project. This will put us into spotlights of numerous communities and increase our chances of success.

Once we make the sale, we will onboard our new Forest Shepherds into RMRK. This will also increase the market for Kanaria and Singular.
