--- tags: discover --- # Discovery / Onboarding (Product Tour) ## Overview ### What is onboarding? User onboarding isn’t just about pointing out key features (although that’s certainly an important part of the process). A complete user onboarding experience may include sales demos, emails, customer success outreach, learn-by-doing patterns, etc—as well as product tours and walkthroughs. Onboarding is an umbrella term that emcompasses a wide array of experiences for the user, such as: - Finding Your Product - Referral Code - Email Invite - Scan a QR Code - Sign Up - Filling out profile info - Choosing Investor/Founder - In-App Product Tour/Walkthrough ... ### What is a walkthrough? Walkthroughs are used by teachers and software products alike to improve comprehension and build muscle memory through step-by-step instructions. ... ### What is a product tour? Product tours are used to point out the key features of an app or interface. Similar to an AirBnB experience, where the host might point out, “this is the cupboard with spare towels, here’s the kettle and toaster, etc”. It is less of a walkthrough, and more of a brief overview. ... ### What does Raise currently have? Raise has already begun its onboarding design process. Again, “onboarding” is a broad term and so we can see it is relevant across a few different features already. - **The first, finding Raise**. This could be done via a friend, or “referal”, but more often than not will come from investors being invited to a deal room (via email invitation). We have also been onboarding different companies as testers for the early web application. - **Secondly, the Sign Up process.** This already involves the process of creating an account (email, Google, Microsoft), choosing your profile type, filling out your details, KYC + AML for investors, etc - **Next, for companies, completing your profile**. This process has been made more clear to the user by disabling the other app features until a profile is verified. Furthermore, there is also a progress bar and “tips on how to get verified” on the company dashboard. (This process could possibly use a brief intro/walkthrough). - For investors, they must **sign an NDA** before entering a deal room. This is yet another onboarding UX… (I would say the Deal Room is fairly self explanatory, however, a product tour could be of use.. E.g click this button if you wish to make an offer etc). ... ### Current State of Onboarding Before overwhelming the user with too much information at once, it would be helpful to prioritise the tasks we wish them to complete before knowing which direction to guide them in. For example, once the user has created their profile (either as an Investor or Company/Founder), their first task will be dependent upon which type of profile they have created. **For Companies**, the onboarding “direction” we want to provide is towards completing their company profile and getting verified. - Currently, companies sign up and are greeted with their Company Dashboard. This displays an element on the right which notifies them that they are not yet notified, as well as information on which areas they should focus on (Company Profile, Legal + Incorporation Docs, Cap Table). - Until their profile and cap table are complete, certain features will be locked (Deal Room, Valuation). “Unlocking” these features could be a great incentive to gamify the verification process. It doesn’t need to be the main focus, but a notification of it would be useful. **For Investors**, given that they have most likely signed up via a Deal Room invite link, their first port of call will be to Sign an NDA. Perhaps once they reach their Dashboard for the first time, we could introduce some sort of product tour (I think this would be wasted energy if we try to walk them through before letting them see a deal…). ## Ideas for Walkthroughs/Product Tours ### Company Welcome (Tour) **Companies** - I think a company would greatly benefit from a brief 3 or 4 slide Welcome/Introduction modal. It could display the following: 1. Welcome to Raise (brief intro to the platform and what you’ll be able to do/how we can help) 2. Complete Your Profile (placing emphasis on profile completion and verification) 3. Verification Unlocks New Features (give them a taste of what’s to come) 4. Get Started by Inviting your Team (they could possibly even do this within the modal) #### Pros #### Cons ... ## Links to Explore https://www.appcues.com/blog/the-5-best-walkthrough-examples https://www.appcues.com/user-onboarding?__hstc=14633128.bffdf8301fcc69de769934a56618073b.1600183285259.1600183285259.1600183285259.1&__hssc=14633128.2.1600183285259&__hsfp=2380297852 https://www.reallygoodux.io/blog/asana-business-upgrade-onboarding https://uxplanet.org/design-of-onboarding-tutorial-greet-inform-engage-55c36c9b4999 ... ## Questions
