# Carbon offset ? ## 1. Why it may suck > *Carbon offsets are a double edge sword. Yes they're good for the planet, but it can also make people and companies feel like they can keep polluting and not try to reduce emissions* ![](https://i.imgur.com/4ksC0Fg.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/iO572aB.png) ## 2. Alternative ways to "compensate" - With your extra money that you want to donate consider donating to something that is more of a gamble: lobbying groups. Donate to citizens climate lobby if you're in the US or a similar lobbying group in your country. There's not direct "carbon offset" but **policy change at the government level is our greatest hope** to fight climate change. - *How to save a planet* had a really great episode on this. It's the one about personal responsibility and whether it matters. In short, **doing things like eating vegan and such has very little impact overall for climate change but is really good in that it makes you focus and think about climate change more often, gets other involved/interested, and highlights the issue**. Policy change is by far the most important thing we need to avoid climate change and the best way to achieve that is by donating to political lobbying groups. ## 3.
