# Moving to GitHub Discussions from email lists ## Why move away from mailing-lists? * Barrier to new contributors * Yet Another Communication Channel to monitor * Searching archives impossible * Hard to link discussion to code-changes/bug reports ## Pros of moving to GitHub Discussions * github UI is familiar to community * many/most users already have a github login * discoverability * but see below * code, bugs, and conversation all in one place * easy to separate out Announcements from Meeting minutes from General discussions etc. ## Cons of GitHub Discussions * Tied to a repo * we had to invent github.com/pulp/community * mot as discoverable as we'd hoped * works, but feels like a hack * Filtering discussion-notifications from "all the other github notifications" is Hard/PITA * discussions-only-repo makes this possible * see prev RE hack * community users already trained to think of github-notifications as 'spam' ("I get literally thousands") ## Other options under consideration * Fedora/Hyperkitty lists * better than Mailman * Discourse * Pulp approved for a free instance * investigation/conversation underway ## Notes from SatTeamLead * tbrisker * discourse experience really good * maintainence has been super ewasy * ggainey to point daviddavis missile at tbrisker * can prob/possibly import mailman archives into discourse? * talk w/ Greg Sutcliffe
