For your DCS project midterm, there are several options to demonstrate meaningful progress and validate key assumptions, depending on the specific challenges and goals identified by your team and sponsor. The deliverable should be tailored to maximize learning and risk-reduction.
For technical feasibility risks or critical features, building a development prototype is more appropriate to directly test those capabilities. The prototype should include an end-to-end slice of the core user journey, but doesn't need to cover all features.
Leveraging cloud platforms like AWS, Azure or Google Cloud allows you to rapidly provision the development environment and infrastructure needed for the prototype without upfront investment or setup time. This is especially helpful for computationally intensive features like AI/ML.
If your project involves customizing an existing enterprise platform like Microsoft Power Automate or Salesforce, the midterm deliverable could be a prototype configuration demonstrating the key workflows and capabilities.
Power Automate's cloud-based tools enable rapid prototyping of automated workflows integrated with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. For Salesforce, you can use the declarative configuration options to tailor the CRM functionality and UX without code.
If the main risks are around the user experience and interface design, creating a high-fidelity prototype in Figma is a good approach. A Figma prototype allows you to:
Figma's cloud-based collaboration features are ideal for iterating on the UX design with your team and stakeholders before investing heavily in development.
Based on the IS483 rubric, the technical component is worth 20% of the midterm grade. While a fully-developed web application is not required, the deliverable should show tangible progress and help validate the critical path for the project.
The optimal scope and format should be driven by your team and sponsor's goals. Focus on tackling the biggest risks and challenges head-on through the prototype deliverable, whether that is a Figma design, development POC, or enterprise solution configuration.
Leveraging cloud-based tools and platforms for the prototype will accelerate the delivery timeline and provide flexibility to adapt as you gain new insights. Make sure to align with your sponsor on the specific deliverable scope and expectations.

The USA's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines five essential characteristics of cloud computing:
On-demand self-service. Consumers can provision computing resources as needed, automatically, without any human interaction.
Broad network access. Capabilities are widely available and can be accessed through heterogeneous platforms such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and workstations.
Resource pooling. Provider resources are pooled in a multi-tenant model, with physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned on demand. The customer generally has no direct control over the exact location of provided resources, but may specify location at a higher level of abstraction (for example country, state, or datacenter).
Rapid elasticity. Capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released to rapidly scale outward or inward according to demand. Consumer capabilities available for provisioning appear to be unlimited and can be appropriated in any quantity at any time.
Measured service. Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource use by leveraging a metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service (for example storage, processing, bandwidth, and active user accounts). Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported for transparency.
Although most people using cloud services do not meet all of these characteristics, in terms of software delivery performance, those who do are over 20 times more likely to be in the elite group than the low-performing group.
