# Energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining: A study of electricity consumption in mining cryptocurrencies

## Résumé:
The PoW mining remains the major scheme and it consumes a large amount of energy. ASIC miners have side-effects.Because of the outstanding hash rate, ASIC miners decreased the decentralization of Bitcoin by making 51% attack possible. To stable the network, others will have to increase their hash rate, which in the end causes higher energy consumption. The experimental results indicated that the hashing algorithm mainly determined the mining efficiency. The differences in computer configurations may affect mining efficiency. The experiments and data analysis showed a significant relationship between the hash rate and power. More energy efficient and environmentally friendly algorithms are needed in developing cryptocurrencies.
