Scientific understanding can help achieve a goal more effectively and more efficiently, but it is not required.

Physicians, unlike scientists, do not rely on pristine experiments to collect data and perform reductionist inferences.

The emergence of *evidence based medicine* marks an important milestone for medicine, moving away from subjective experience to objective evidence.
However, it relies heavily on the reductionist statistical frameworks of the late 1900s - much of its foundation was set by the time high-dimensional inference tools, namely machine learning, became tractable.
