## Notes
- intros
- tristan. patcon.
- tristan. idea! failed for-profit project.
- looking for ideas to make it more publicly useful
- rentals.ca or viewit.ca for finding places to live
- needs updating. worked on over 10 years part-time. gmaps ToS updates.
- not live anymore. was rentbetter.ca (lost domain)
- had a bunch of features missing from main sites
- multi-lingual. because all check-boxes, so landlord didn't need to speak mulitple languages
- like MLS for renting
- feels important to confirm accurancy
- didn't finish before rentals.ca arrives, and gave up when they launched. looked like they were going to dominate.
- current for-profit model = $55/month from landlord
- not needing to charge, or charging little
- just needs fix-ups
- BUT main challenge is to get it in front of landlords
- pc: community civic tech projects have strengths, but running sustainable services are harder
- free might not be best?
- pc: "just the monitoring" is also "just the hardest and most thankless part of the work" for community
- tristan: big part for community is the launch, the network-building
- pc: how to build ownership on project when work is done?
- only useful in urban areas. free services work fine in rural areas. kijiji.
- potential community project scopes
- 1. tristan: launch and advertising of platform (grassroots)
- 2. pc: researching governance structures (ie. launching of nonprofit?)
- leaning toward this one. a few years ago, worked on this. want to do a non-typical launch.
- 3. pc: converting to open source (documentation, hosting, CI, updating dependencies)
- 4. pc: prep to launch platform co-operative based on software
- patcon: thinks this is the most worthy
- stakeholder groups
- big corp landords (tend to not use deceptive ads)
- more aware of paltform than small-scale tenants
- small landlords
- tenants
- platform workers
- high profit (tristan did calculations)
- also likely very high spend on network-building, abd network-keeping
- platforms like this are natural monopoly
- close to rentfaster.ca (natural monopoly in calgary)
- viewit.ca in toronto is spending almost nothing
- (2) and (4) are very similar. maybe same.
- won't pitch without hosting website
- 4h to prep
- proposal: if not ready to show by Jan 2, then still pitch
- goal = website fixed and hosted, but won't block
- tech stack. html, js, php, mysql.
