# Proposal: Organize CivicTechTO more publicly * [Skip to Proposal](#proposal) ## Background This section is for listing background facts and feelings. Please feel free to contribute new statements or add your name to existing ones! **Legend** :mag: Fact  Feeling **Statements** :mag: The organizing channel is a private, invite-only channel. :mag: Community members can only see the internals of how we organize after explicit invitation to the organizing channel. :mag: Some conversations are necessarily privileged among (and with) organizers. :mag: Within `#organize-the-things`, the majority of conversations are not privileged. :mag: The public channel `#operations` currently exists, but is unofficial and rarely used. :mag: There are successful examples of similar organizations working more transparently and horizontally.[1](#references) [2](#references) I feel curious about how organizing could be more transparent. (patcon) I feel curious about how organizing could be more horizontal within the whole of the community. (patcon) I feel that organizing within the organizers group is wonderfully horizontal. (patcon) I feel inspired by the successes of other leaderless and horizontal movements. (patcon) Regardless of possible changes, I currently feel that I am part of a remarkably resilient and horizontal community. (patcon) I feel like the small burden of having two organizer channels is perhaps the cost of organizing in a way that is aligned with our collective values. (patcon) ## Proposal - [ ] 1. Add everyone from `#organize-the-things` into `#operations`. - [ ] 2. Rename `#organize-the-things` to `#operations-privileged` (to make clear that the private group is for sensitive conversation). - [ ] 3. Encourage organizers to use `:ctto:` as a status emoji to communicate that they're organizers. - [ ] 4. During transition, when people feel that a message in private channel belongs in the public one, tag it with the reaction emoji `:sunny:`:sunny:. If the poster agrees, they may choose to move their own message to the public channel. ## References 1.
