# Building the future, in the open.
## Introduction
For a while now, I have been very interested in open-source software. The fact that people around the globe can come together to work on solving interesting problems with software is something that is both fascinating and promising.
However, looking at today's OSS landscape, it's very interesting that most open source software being built are either developer tools or small test projects for demonstration purposes. As great and important as these are, I believe they only scratch the surface of the power of open-source and collaboration in software building.
This is why I started building Overt. Overt aims to create a community of software developers interested in building open-source software to solve very interesting problems that people face everyday.
## What problems need solving?
In today's world, there are a lot of problems to solve, ranging from autonomous driving to climate change. For example, a complete overhaul of the global financial systems is underway via the development of blockchain technology. There are also strides being taken in fields like machine learning and biotech. Overt aims to play a part in solving these problems, and as such does not have any niches.
## Community, coordination and collaboration
Traditionally, one of the most difficult things to crack while building open-source software has been building communities. Coordination and collaboration are quite difficult to get right. This is why Overt is being designed to be community-first. Overt will be a DAO, meaning that decisions will be community-managed.
That being said, it is important to note that Overt does not have a decided financial model or token yet. The economic upside generated from this project is meant to aid the core vision of the project (in other words, Overt's token is not intended to be a HODL token).
## Funding open source
The most pressing threat to the future of open source software is sustainability. Open-source projects, require funding to sustain maintainers and enable development to continue.
One of the most important problems that crypto has helped to solve is the democratization of finance.
As a DAO, Overt aims to contribute to solving the sustainability problem in open source by funding the projects that originate from the community and its members.
Since the projects built are open-source and public goods, there is no expectation of economic upside for the project. At least at the start of the project, tokens exist only for governance purposes and funding for projects.
