# Mapping Local Spatial Knowledge with Pen & Paper
**OpenStreetMap Philippines**
2024 April, Iloilo City
<!-- .slide: data-background="https://imgur.com/z9oz3hU.jpg"-->
---
### Topics
* OpenStreetMap
* preview editing with RapiD
* Field Papers
* Using OpenAerialMap & drone imagery
* Sketch Map Tool
* Umap
----
### Objective
Enable participants to collect local spatial knowledge that can be easily digitized using low-cost technologies.
----
:card_index:
- Erwin Olario
- being ~~OSM~~ awesome since ~~2007~~ 2012
- 🤪 LoCo advocate : OSM-PH
- OFW
----
### Highlights
* engage stakeholders with participatory mapping approach
* record and visualize local spatial knowledge, perceptions and "stories"
* on site, offline collection
* no GIS or OSM experience required for end-users
* useful when data is sparse or no baseline data is available
* digitized data can be used for local vulnerability and capacity assessments
---
### Maps
* here we are (location)
* where to go (places)
* find interests (things)
* how to get there (navigation)
----
* what map do you use?
* what can you find in your map?
---
### OpenStreetMap (OSM)
:linked_paperclips: openstreetmap.org
----
### OSM is awesome!
* you're probably using it already
* many brands uses OSM behind the hood
----
* *Facebook, Apple, Grab, Strava, Microsoft, Komoot, Amazon, Instagram, OrganicMaps*
* **you!**
---
### Why OSM?
----

Datasets and attributes available from OSM.
----

*The ODbL license is generous, and free.*
----

*We have maps.*
----

*The data is available*
----

*Letting people to use it creatively*
---
# Let's go!
----
### editing OSM on PCs
:linked_paperclips: bit.ly/osmph-rapideditor
RapiD is a fork of the popular iD, web-based OSM editor, with extra features like AI detections
----

10 minutes, self-led exploration.
----
## Save edits? :no_good:
* OSM data is **live** data, so we won't save the data you've been playing with.
----
### Nowhere to know where!
Real-life features on OSM are represented by
* Points (nodes)
* Lines (ways)
* Areas (areas)
* Tags (attributes)
---
### Pen & Paper Mapping
* Low-cost, low-tech
* Minimal training
* Fresh geodata!
----

---
### Data to ...
* ==Identify risk exposure== by mapping who and what is most exposed to hazards and other threats and issues facing the community.
* ==Show== the different vulnerabilities, capacities and resources in the community and stimulate discussion.
* ==Obtain== general information for different sectors (livelihoods, health, and shelter, etc).
----
* ==Analyse== the links and patterns of risks in the community
* ==Identify== risk factors in the environment outside the immediate community boundaries
---
### Field Papers
----

----

----

---
### Hands-on with FieldPapers
:linked_paperclips: fieldpapers.org
---
### Choosing a background
OpenStreetMap vs Aerial imagery
:linked_paperclips: bit.ly/osmph-workshop-iloilo-drrmo
---
### Choosing Paper sizes
* ISO A4, A3 - individual, field work
* ISO A2, A1 - participatory mapping activities
---
### Aerial imagery from Drone
:linked_paperclips: OpenAerialMap.org
----

----
Copy the TMS from OAM and paste in FP

---
#### Activities
- [ ] Divide into groups of 3-4 pax.
- [ ] Create an Atlas
- [ ] ~~Print~~ Distribute prepared print-out
- [ ] Annotate/Role-play
- [ ] Upload
- [ ] *Pretend* edit. Do not save.
---
### Q&A
---
:coffee: Break!
----
### Call for volunteer, with OSM account

---

----
## Sketch Map Tool (SMT)
:linked_paperclips: sketch-map-tool.heigit.org
----
A new alternative to FieldPapers, easy to create, but less options for advanced users (e.g. external tiles)
---
### Workflow

---
### Create a Sketch Map

----

----
* **Quality Check Report** indicates "fitness" of the area for a sketch map. Without basic map data (roads, critical infrasture, landuse), it will be very hard for users to orient themselves with the map.
* **Sketch Map Template** is the printable map you can use for your field work. It could be an OSM-based, or use a satellite image background.
----

----

----

----

---
### Annotation Exercise ("field mapping")
- [ ] Distribute SMT print-out
- [ ] Divide class into group of 15 pax
- [ ] Simulate group discussion, annotate map with coloured pens, notes or stickers.
- [ ] Take a photo of marked map and upload to SMT website
---

---

---
Your upload will produce a digitized version of your marked-up mark ("geodata".)
* Vector - georeferenced , rasterized image (geoTIFF) for further use with GIS software
* Raster - vectorized polygons (GeoJSON) for further use in GIS software, or visualization.
---
Umap + GeoJSON for Visualization.
---
### UMap
:linked_paperclips: umap.openstreetmap.fr/en
---
1. Create a new map (no account needed)
2. Import the GeoJSON from above
3. Update basic attributes
4. Share with your community
---
:linked_paperclips: u.osmfr.org/m/1048714/
---
### Marking & Annotation Tips
* Develop and share your marking strategy beforehand
* What should be mapped?
* How should it be mapped?
* Use clear markings with intense colours and strong lines
* Use legends
* Mapping can be done in groups or individually
* Do not mark the globes or the QR code
---
FP and SMT are not magic bullets, but they can foster community involvement, speed-up data collection, serve as a bridge into the formal DRR process, and ease usability of gained results.
----
* Supports formalization and visualization of local knowledge
* Makes analog spatial data available in digital format
* Facilitates combination with other geodata
---
### Q&A
----
#### Key Learnings
* How would you like to use the SMT or FP?
* How would it support your work?
