No, we will [not do this](https://xkcd.com/2148/).* ## Overview [DATUM.ph](https://datum.ph/) in partnership with OpenStreetMap Philippines (OSM-PH) is offering free drone imagery collection service to selected communities to enable collection of high resolution aerial imagery for improving OpenStreetMap data in the Philippines. Individuals and mapping communities in the Philippines are encouraged to apply. ## FAQ ### How can drone/UAV provide high quality aerial imagery for OpenStreetMap? Drone-derived aerial imagery can provide very high resolution (up to 2-3 cm) aerial imagery that most satellite imagery cannot provide. It can be deployed anywhere depending on local conditions. Drone-derived imagery has been used by the OSMPh community in several parts of the country (see examples below). By providing free drone imagery data collection services, local communities can improve the resolution of the baseline imagery that can be used for detailed mapping in OpenStreetMap. * Lupang Arenda drone mapping project - Leigh's [diary on data collection](https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/geoleighyers/diary/391138), WeMap session on [using drone imagery for mapping buildings](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJPRwfW5pWA). * Pista ng Mapa 2020 [Technology for Property Rights](https://pistangmapa.github.io/2020/programme/session/pnm200206) - a presentation on using drone technology and participatory mapping for land titling and other purposes. * [Extracting building height from drone derived elevation model](https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/maning/diary/390573). ### Who can apply for this drone collection program? The collection site is limited to the following areas: Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Pampanga, and Metro Manila. Any individual or group from within the OpenStreeMap PH community can apply for this collection program. A community member is defined as a person having an OSM user account and has been mapping in the Philippines for the past year (marked as an active contributor in [HDYC](https://hdyc.neis-one.org/) in both criteria). Proponents must show a plan and timeline on how they intend to use the aerial imagery for local planning and development, including digitizing data on OpenStreetMap. Project should highlight the potential impact of open data and active participation of local communities. ### How can we access the aerial imagery? All processed imagery (orthomosaic, digital surface model (DSM) and, digital terrain model (DTM)) will be primarily used for mapping in OpenStreetMap but will be available to the public via [OpenAerialMap.org](https://map.openaerialmap.org). Unprocessed data will be shared by OpenStreetMap Philippines in a public repository, for anyone who wish to do research and other applications based on the unprocessed images. ### How can we apply? Please submit a 1 page proposal with the following information: * What is your project? * How can OpenStreetMap open data help in achieving your project objectives? * How can drone imagery enable the success of your project? * How will you make sure the diverse participation of the local community in all aspects of your project? * Do tell us how you've successfully worked with the intended communities in the past. * What is your timeline for digitizing your project's core data elements using the drone imagery into OpenStreetMap? By submitting your proposal, you declare that the information you provided are true and correct; and we reserve the right to disclose the same to various OpenStreetMap stakeholders, or the interested public, after the announcement of the grant selection has been made. Send proposal to `osm.pilipinas+drone2021@gmail.com`. ### How large of an area can we apply for this drone imagery? DATUM commited to provide data collection of ~100 hectares of total area for the year 2021. We will divide this into several parts depending on the request from applicants. A single application can be for an area of ~25 hectares, this coverage is ideal for small communities or barangay. Collection will be only in the Philippines and will be approved by DATUM.ph based on their logistical requirements. Due to travel restrictions collection is limited to the following locations: **Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Pampanga, and Metro Manila**. ### What are the timeline for the proposals? - Call for proposals - October 2021 - Review and selection - October-November 2021 - Announcement of selected proposals - November 2021 - Start of collection - November 2021, schedules and logistics (following health protocols) will be arranged with OSM-PH and DATUM. ### We want to collect our own drone imagery, can you give us drone equipment? **NO.** ### Who is DATUM.ph? ![1_20210803_023553_0000](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/353700/131640051-bf3ca4f3-6d15-41f3-ad87-1fbfe8789b19.png) DATUM.ph is Filipino geospatial company founded by Sorbi Ildefonso.
