# Activities of local chapter in Japan (OpenStreetMap Foundation 日本支部の活動)

日本では、OpenStreetMap は、2011年3月に発生した東日本大震災のレスポンス活動であるSinsai.infoの母体になったこと、その背景地図として震災マッピングが注目されたことで、日本で広く知られることになりました。

OpenStreetMap have been well-known as one of Map service in Japan East-Japan Great Disaster and Tunami in March, 2011 in Japan. It is because we start and operate Sinsai.Info, a disaster information site and project utilize Ushahidi, and that uses OpenStreetMap as a base map.

それに先だつ2010年12月に、OpenStreetMap Foundation Japan, G.A. (以下 OSMFJ)が、日本におけるOpenStreetMapの知財権の管理、日本と日本語におけるコミュニティ活動を支援する目的で設立されています。

Just before earthquake come, we had found OpenStreetMap Foundation japan, G.A. (herebyafter called OSMFJ) in December, 25, 2010 to promote OSM in Japan and community who use Japanese language, and to protect interectual property of OpenStreetMap, trademark.

OSMFJは、2008年頃から日本のマッピングコミュニティ活動をリードしてきた主要メンバーで設立され、その後も日本でのOpenStreetMapの普及をめざして啓発活動をおこなってきました。

OSMFJ had been founded by active Japanese mappers who lead mapping community from early 2008, and continously promote OSM in Japan.

また、法人格をいかして、日本、アジアにおけるインターネットドメイン名(StateoftheMap.jp, StateOfTheMap.asia, OSM.jp, Openstreetmap.asia, Openstreetmap.jp)の維持、OpenStreetMapの登録商標の登録維持を実施しています。

OSMFJ also keep the internet domain name, such as stateofthemap.jp, stateofthemap.asia, osm.jp, openstreetmap.asia, openstreetmap.jp, and has held registerd trademark of OpenStreetMap from the start.

設立にあたっては、OSMF:OpenStreetMap Foundationとの連携をとりながら活動することを明確にしていました。OSMFとLocal Chapterの検討をおこなって、OSMFへの登録商標の移管を完了させ、2021年3月にLocal Chapterとして登録されました。

OSMFJ founded with by-laws that cleary describe collaboration with OpenStreetMap Foundation (herebyafter called OSMF). We communicate deeply with OSMFJ, and finished transfering of trademark to OSMF and registered as Local chapter of OSMF in March, 2021.

## Community

日本および日本語のコミュニティは、メーリングリスト、Webサイト、Wikiサイトおよび、チャットサービスでコミュニケーションをとりながら、マッピングや活用を進めています。

OSM Japan community communicate each other on Mail list, web site, wiki and chat, and promote mapping and utilization of OpenStreetMap.

Local chapterのOSMFJはWebサイトなどを運営しますが、Mapperが主体となって活動するように
支援する活動をおこなっています。

OSMFJ operate web site and activities to help mappers to be a
owner of initiatives.

## 日本のマッピングと地図の特徴

日本では、高精度の地図の整備が古くからおこなわれています。1800年から、日本全国の地図整備がはじめられたという歴史があります。

そのためか、品質のたかい地図が、民間および政府から提供されているという状況がありました。

一から地図をつくる、すでに高品質の地図およびマップサービスが無償で手にはいる状況がありましたので、一般利用者には、理解が難しいところがありました。

OpenStreetMapは、そんななか、ITの世界で先行していた Free/Libre/Open Source Softwareのコミュニティから普及していきました。

OpenSourceのGeo Toolを普及させていた OSGeo日本支部 および Linuxコニュニティの協力のもと、マッパーを増やしていきました。

OSMFJは、地域のコミュニティを支援するため、OSM Japanサイトを2008年より運営しています。

また、Slackなどのネットワーキングへの入口となっています。

##### Mapping party

OSM Japanサイトでは、多くのマッピングパーティ情報が掲載されています。これらは、地域のマッパーにより開催されており、OSMFJはイベントの広報を助けています。

OSM Japan site show many mapping party. These are organized by local mappers, and OSMFJ help promoting the event.

日本では、月に数回、マッピングパーティが各地で開催されています。新型コロナの感染拡大がありましたが、影響をあまりうけていない地域では、継続して開催されています。

There are several mapping parties in every months. It has been still in COVID-19 pandemic, but there are a few mapping parties in regional areas.

#### SotM Japan Conference

OSMFJは、State of the Map Japanカンファレンスを2年に一度、偶数年に開催しています。

OSMFJ organizes State of the Map Japan conference in bi-annual(once par 2-years).

#### SotM global conference

OSMFJは、State of the Map グローバルカンファンレスを実行委員会の一員として、2017年に会津若松で開催しました。200名をこえる参加者が23か国から参加しました。

We co-organize SotM global conference in Aizu-Wakamatsu in 2017.
There are over 200 attendees from 23 countries gathered.

日本のマッパーが集うSlack workspace, OSM Japan, があり、200名をこえる方々があつまっています。

There is a Slack workspace, OSM Japan, where gathers over 200 mappers from all over Japan.

Slackチャネルには、 OSM JAPANサイトから参加することができます。

There is an introduction and entry point on OSM Japan web site.

#### MappyHour

MappyHour は、みんなで好きな場所の地図(OpenStreetMap)を描くオンラインイベントです。毎週土曜日21時ころから開催しています。

A OSMFJ member operate Mappy Hours that is periodically share mapping effort on Slack every Saturday night.


MappyHour は、OSMFJのboard memberであり、熱心なマッパーであり、ソフトウエア開発者でもあるMr. K. Sakanoshitaがもりあげています。

Mr. K. Sakanoshita, active mapper, software developer, and board member of OSMFJ, leads MappyHour initiatives.

## Collaboration

### OSGeo日本支部

OSMFJは、OSGeo財団の日本における公式の支部「OSGeo日本支部 （OSGeo.JP）」と
連携して、OSMの普及をすすめています。

OSMFJ has collaborated with OSGeo Japan (herebyafter OSGeo.JP), which is authorized local chapter of OSGeo Foundation, and promote OSM in Japan.

2020年11月には、OSMFJとOSGeo.JP共催で、State of the Map Japan 2020と、FOSS4G Tokyo/Online カンファレンスを開催しました。また、それに先立って、Geo Week and Weekend 2020というハッカソンイベントを開催し、OpenStreetMapの活用や、Geoなツールのローカライズや機能向上などをはかっています。

OSMFJ and OSGeo.JP co-organized the online conference, SotM Japan 2020 and FOSS4G Tokyo/Online. We also co-organized a hackason event titled "Geoweek and Weekend 2020" to promote OpenStreetMap applications, localize and improvement of Geo tools.

### 政府や自治体との連携

日本では、国土の地図を管轄する政府機関である 国土地理院 が権威ある機関としてしられています。

A government agency of maps, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan is welknown.

国土地理院でも、OpenStreetMapにはいち早く注目しており、OSMFJ創立当初より、意見交換をおこなったり、国土地理院の保有する航空写真などのトレースをマッパーへ2011年に許諾したりと協力をおこなってきました。

OSMFJ keep in touch with the agency from our start. They gave us a permission to trace their aero photomap in 2011, and continously cooporate to enhance map data in Japan.
