# 2023 - SENT - Migrate talk-be to discourse

Hi,

As you may be aware, the old forum is coming to a close. The migration is still ongoing, but there's already an active Belgian page at https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/be/ . All the content of the old forum will be moved to community.openstreetmap.org. This is a Discourse instance, hosted by the OpenStreetMap Foundation.

Discourse has a lot of advantages compared to the old forum - one of the most important ones being that the software is still maintained! (this made the old forum prone to breaking)
A nice step forward is that you don't need Yet Another Account. You can simply use your OpenStreetMap account to log in to community.osm.org.

Over the last decade or so, OpenStreetMap in Belgium has had three main channels:
- a live chatroom (on Matrix, commonly used via Element, sometimes via IRC) (https://app.element.io/#/room/#osmbe-channels:matrix.org)
- this mailing list
- the forum

Over the last years, both the forum and this mailing list have not been very active. On the other hand, the main chatroom is always busy, and we have a lot of topical rooms as well. But of course we also need a slower, more permanent channel like a forum or mailing list.

This is why we would like to suggest to users of this mailing list to use community.osm.org instead. This way, we can combine the dynamics of the old forum with this group.

If you enjoy e-mail based conversation, don't worry! It is largely possible to use community.osm.org as if it is a mailing list.

To start following the Belgian channel, simply go to https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/be/ and click in the bell icon on the top right. You can then choose what kind of notifications you'd like to get. In the settings of your profile, you can choose when you would like e-mails to be send.

You can simply reply to e-mail notifications to add to the conversation. It is not yet possible to create new topics by e-mail, but this is on the roadmap.

OpenStreetMap Belgium has been working to consolidate channels before. We have removed our Facebook page from the OSM community index (and hence osm.be) already, because it saw very little use. We think a smaller number of more active channels is better for everyone. So we will encourage the transition to community.osm.org. The talk-be archive will obviously stay online forever (there is also talk of importing this to community.osm.org) and we have no intention of actually shutting down the mailing list in the foreseable future.

Zoals jullie wellicht weten, loopt het oude forum ten einde. De migratie is nog bezig, maar er is al een actieve Belgische pagina op https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/be/ . Alle inhoud van het oude forum wordt gekopieerd naar community.openstreetmap.org. Dit is een Discourse instance, gehost door de OpenStreetMap Foundation.

Discourse heeft veel voordelen ten opzichte van het oude forum - een van de belangrijkste is dat de software nog steeds wordt onderhouden! (het oude forum gaf heel wat technische issues)
Een mooie stap vooruit is dat je niet "nog maar eens een account" nodig hebt. Je kunt gewoon je OpenStreetMap account gebruiken om in te loggen op community.osm.org.

De laatste tien jaar heeft OpenStreetMap in België drie belangrijke kanalen gehad:

Als je van e-mail gebaseerde conversatie houdt, maak je geen zorgen! Het is grotendeels mogelijk om community.osm.org te gebruiken alsof het een mailinglijst is.

Om het Belgische kanaal te gaan volgen, ga je naar https://community.openstreetmap.org/c/communities/be/ en klik je op het bel-icoontje rechtsboven. Je kunt dan kiezen welke meldingen je wilt ontvangen. In de instellingen van je profiel kun je kiezen wanneer je e-mails wilt ontvangen.

U kunt gewoon antwoorden op e-mailmeldingen om het gesprek aan te vullen. Het is nog niet mogelijk om per e-mail nieuwe onderwerpen aan te maken, maar dit staat wel op de planning.

OpenStreetMap België heeft al eerder gewerkt aan het consolideren van kanalen. We hebben onze Facebook-pagina al verwijderd uit de OSM community index (en dus osm.be), omdat ze erg weinig gebruikt werd. We denken dat een kleiner aantal meer actieve kanalen beter is voor iedereen. We zullen dus de overgang naar community.osm.org aanmoedigen. Het talk-be archief zal uiteraard altijd online blijven (er is ook sprake van om dit te importeren naar community.osm.org) en we zijn niet van plan om de mailinglijst in de nabije toekomst op te heffen.
