# DAO Drops - Round 1 Execution
## Description
DAO Drops is a public goods funding experiment that leverages on-chain data to empower Ethereum ecosystem participants to make fund allocation decisions.
People who have participated in activities that indicate they would be an informed decision maker, are given fund allocation power. For Drop 1, the allocators are comprised of these three sets of addresses, and as we do iterative rounds we will refine the allocation scoring algorithm:
- Galaxy.eco’s Shadowy Super Coder list. 110,294 Ethereum addresses who have deployed at least 1 contract on Ethereum mainnet before August 1st, 2021, and deployed contracts that had at least 2 different addresses interacted.
- POAPs for all past DevCon’s, ETHCC, ETH Paris, and ETH Denver.
- DeepDAO’s data set of participants in DAOs.
These allocators vote on projects from a public nomination process which will include outreach to local Ethereum meetup organizers for geographic inclusion. A [curation process](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fDx9glg-O-bc1scrmMdPgc7z73zeJNCknih8n81XPwU/edit?usp=sharing) will reduce the number of projects to review for nomination, to mitigate popularity contest. Each project will receive funds in proportion to the points they were given by allocators.

## Background
Following the successful completion of the [DAO Drops R&D Ethereum Foundation Grant](https://hackmd.io/ARzW_zW_SJ2dt7bDBwR4Xg), we are requesting a follow-on grant to execute DAO Drops Round.
During the R&D grant, we successfully:
- Researched different approaches to the public goods funding problem ([gitbook](https://magentadorg.gitbook.io/daodrops/))
- [Mocked up](https://www.figma.com/file/Gw9ffcpyZc94ThbyCe8sBe/DAO-DROPS?node-id=157%3A13460
) and developed the DAO Drops [web app](https://github.com/dOrgTech/DAO-Drops)
- Developed the [scoring algorithm and script](https://github.com/dOrgTech/DAO-Drops/tree/main/scripts)
- Prepped the [communication plan](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fF6_fab0ll3etW18QHbyKgxWogRp7vleq_QMtf9JMck/edit#gid=1192532562)
- Gathered and integrated [feedback from relevant voices in the ecosystem](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dZkvdbzm1lDA9InfCBluharrAWgC2oxb4ejd3vjg4tA/edit)
## Deliverables
For the execution of Round 1, we plan to:
- Preparation (2 weeks)
- Finalize Curatorial Board
- Finalize Legal Analysis
- Marketing & Outreach
- Execution (4 weeks)
1. **Nomination** Phase - anyone can nominate anyone
2. **Curation** & KYC - committee scores submissions and requests KYC info from nominees
3. **Allocation** Phase - anyone can sign in to allocate the points they were awarded to nominees
4. Distribute funds to nominees and mint POAPs to allocators
- Eval Round 1 & Plan Round 2 (3 weeks)
1. Send survey to all nominees and analyze results
2. Formulate updated scoring algorithm and execution plan for the next round
3. Publish blog post detailing the results and next steps

## Impact
This program will address the need to decentralize the funding of the larger Ethereum ecosystem, in order to more intelligently allocate capital and resources to development.
We believe that these DAOs will help the EF achieve its core mission:
> Our mission is to do what is best for Ethereum’s long-term success. Our role is to allocate resources to critical projects, to be a valued voice within the Ethereum ecosystem, and to advocate for Ethereum to the outside world.
This work will benefit the Ethereum community and the world at large. Beneficiaries may include local communities adopting Ethereum tools, engineers who see the need for specific advances, and more.
We plan to source funds for future rounds from additional donors after proving out the success of round 1 with EF funds.
A long term goal of this project is to establish a continuous retroactive public goods funding mechanism to more effectively distribute funds to where they are needed most in the ecosystem.
## Needs and Challenges
- Curation step -> finalizing a process that minimizes bias in selecting the final nominees from candidates
- Communications -> getting too many candidates to feasibly curate or not enough to produce a high quality set of nominees
- Outreach -> making sure we are reaching a wide range of projects, including under-represented ones in need of funding
- Evaluation -> surfacing useful insights from the data generated from the pilot

## Previous work
[dOrg](https://www.dorg.tech) accelerates development and adoption of diverse projects in the Web3 ecosystem. We are organized as a DAO and believe that DAOs have the potential to support wiser human collaboration, and more freedom in how people work and coordinate resources.
In 2019 we made history by [incorporating the first DAO legal wrapper in the US](https://www.coindesk.com/dorg-founders-have-created-the-first-limited-liability-dao). Since then we have built software for projects like Gnosis, Starkware, Aragon, Balancer, The Graph, Badger, Rarible, DAOstack, ParaSwap and Boardroom.
