##
**Introduction to O-RAN & 5G Standard**

### **Important Aspects**
#### **1. Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN)**
#### **2. Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Alliance**
#### **3. Open Source Projects RAN Transformation**
### **Summary**
O-RAN (Open RAN) is a term used for industry-wide standards for RAN (Radio Access Network) interfaces that support interoperation between vendors’ equipment and offer network flexibility at a lower cost. The Open RAN standards aim to change the siloed nature of the RAN market, where a bunch of RAN vendors only offer equipment and software that is totally proprietary. This reduces flexibility and interoperability
5G Network Operation Modes are:
* Non-Stand-Alone (NSA) Operation: Use 4G core network
* Stand-Alone (NSA) Operation: Use 5G core network
O-RAN Alliance was founded in February 2018 with the intention of promoting open and intelligent RAN. It was formed by a merger namely the C-RAN Alliance and the XRAN Forum. The C-RAN Alliance consisted of China Mobile and a lot of other Chinese vendors. On the other hand, the XRAN Forum consisted of US, European, Japanese and South Korean vendors and operators. AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo and Orange were the initial founding operators. Benefits of O-RAN Architecture:
* Reducing network CAPEX and OPEX
* Improving network efficiency and performance
* Importing new capability with great agility
Challanges of Open Source Projects:
* Keep pace with the standad
* Latency and scalability issues
* Limited contributions for RAN open source software
* Lack of robust, deployable, and well-documented software
* Need for secure open software software
Open source projects by O-RAN Alliance and Linux Foundation: O-RAN Software Community (OSC) & O-RAN Specification Code Project (OSCP)
### Comment
Technological developments like this can make greater progress, especially for users and providers.
