# Short announcement (to pass along to e.g. SNIC, Carpentries, ...)
The Nordic-RSE is organizing an online (un)conference on 29-30 June 2021 to bring its community members together to share experiences and knowledge.
To kick off the event on 29th we have invited speakers and the rest of the event is yours! Bring your ideas on the day or before the event. We welcome anything from talks and demos to discussion topics and mini-workshops.
See https://nordic-rse.org/events/2021-online-unconference/ for more information and a registration link.
# Unconference announcement email to members
Dear Nordic-RSE members,
Thank you again for registering as members of the Nordic-RSE group.
We are organizing an online (un)conference on June 29-30. This is a lightweight event where we rely on you to build the schedule. You can either add your ideas to the schedule before the event, or just join the unconference and come up with ideas there. We welcome anything from talks and demos to discussion topics and workshops.
To kick off the event on the 29th we also have invited speakers. Stay tuned for updates!
See https://nordic-rse.org/events/2021-online-unconference/ for more information and a registration link.
As the COVID situation prevents us from running in person events, we hope the unconference helps us build the community and create new connections with research software around the Nordics.
On behalf of the Nordic-RSE group,
Jarno Rantaharju
# Announcement to Aalto
Nordic Research Software Engineer unconference
Hi all,
On 29-30.june 14-17, there will be an "unconference" hosted by
Nordic-Research Software Engineers. If you are interested in the
software/data/computing behind the science, and wish to talk to other
like-minded people, attend and/or submit an event. Clearly, it is
online:
https://nordic-rse.org/events/2021-online-unconference/
As an "unconference", this is more informal than most events (perfect
for the season). Anyone can suggest talks/discussions/workshops/demos, either in advance or
during the event, and we'll assign space based on interest. This is
really the kind of thing that you can talk about you favorite tool and
lead a little discussion. Works in progress are OK.
"Research software engineer" describes a researcher who is more
interested in the tech than the papers. This event is a great way to
network if you feel this describes you. You can read more at
https://nordic-rse.org/ .
If you have any questions, please let me know.

**Title:** Developing and distributing in-house R-packages
**Abstract:** R is mainly a statistical programming language than has been around for more than 20 years. In recent years, it has seen a large resurge in popularity, especially amongst researchers, for its powerful statistical backbone and open source practice. But R can be unfamiliar and intimidating for researchers used to a purely GUI based statistical tool. This talk will center around how I have developed in-house R tools to clean and handle in-house data, and how I have distributed these to work on multiple platforms.

**Title:** Julia for research software engineers
**Abstract:** Julia is a dynamic programming language with a design which makes it a good choice for research software engineers. This talk will present three areas where Julia shine: productivity, performance, and reproducibility.

**Title:** Keep your code alive - lessons from the QuTiP project
**Abstract:** The quantum toolbox in Python (QuTiP) is a widely used tool for simulating quantum physics. In this talk we will discuss QuTiP's journey from a python project started by two Ph.D. students to a community of developers and users spread all across the globe. The talk will focus on building an open-source community and how QuTiP was kept alive through contributions from the community, Google summer of Code and different academic and non-academic funding opportunities.
