Out hypothesis is that many (a few now but in the future many!) Holochain applications will want to have the ability to provide a unique handle to virtually anything in the application (agents, groups, application names, etc.) for purposes of easily identifying a particular datum or to play with the vanity of human beings (I want people to associate my online experience with my **unique** handle).
However, in a truly distributed network (like Holochain), creating and storing rivalrous (unique) data deterministically can be challenging both technically and logistically. This is simply because, unlike in a traditional centralized application or blockchain based application, there is no one database or centralized ledger that can be checked for uniqueness of a particular data. In Holochain, everyone writes at the public space (Distributed Hash Table to be precise but not important to know here) all at the same time. So the question is, how do you ensure that no one is registering *tatssato* handle besides me? If it was twitter, they can lock the database for any other writes of new handles while I'm registering my handle; and for blockchain, you can check the entire ledger's history and have consensus that *tatssato* has indeed never been registered before.
In Holochain, there is no inherent way of doing what I just mentioned possible in centralized database or blockchain. **This is where nomdenet comes into picture**. By running 7 witnesses as agents with high uptime, we can run a majority of consensus (4 out of 7) among these 7 witness agents everytime a new handle is being registered by anyone from any Holochain applications. Nomdenet then removes many of the hurdles for the Holochain Application Developers to **deterministically allow unique (rivalrous) data to exist**. Some of the hurdles are, writing complex validations rules, coding countersigning sessions, finding people to run 7 witness nodes, creation of some sort of payment mechanism in case of need, etc.
- **Provides a simple yet reasonable business model for the Holochain Apps**
- After purchasing *local name (only unique within one namespace)* coupons at a set price (15c as of the moment), happ developers can set the price (from free to a certain upper limit?) of their local name.
