Housekeeping (2 min) 2. Updates from the different thematic CoPs () 3. What is a community of practice? (3min) 4. Today's discussion and sharing (50 min) 5. Next steps (13 min) --- ## Housekeeping 1. calls at http://gg.gg/APCCoP (case insensitive) 1. recording 2. language 3. be kind 4. notes at https://pad.riseup.net/p/CoPs-meeting-25-feb-keep --- ## Where we are now? 25/02: Introduction meetings 28/03: CoP 1 Kick-off (passiv infrastructure) 30/03: CoP 2 Kick-off (active infrastructure) **01/04: CoP 3 Kick-off (local servers, services and content** 04/04: CoP 4 Kick-off (sustainability) 06/04: CoP 5 Kick-off (value driven CNs) --- ### What is a community of practice? --- A community of practice (CoP) is a group of people who **share** a concern or a **passion** for something they **do**. --- They collaborate in dynamics of immersive learning, sharing knowledge and learning by doing, based on the needs of the community and **learn how to do it better as they interact** regularly." --- The methodologies for these **learning exchanges** and forms of interaction **must be defined collectively** and not hierarchically, having as a concern the inclusion of gender, race/ethnicity, diverse habilities and different levels of knowledge, validating empirical knowledge and promoting an environment free of prejudice. --- In the past it was quite ad-hoc and not collaborative approach, growing communities of practitioneers and grant makers, particular networks, oportunities for fundings... in the spirit of it we came up with this 5 potential CoPs. --- We (as in LOCNET) are very much learning by doing and can refine the strategy as we go forward and are very interest in hearing your feedback on Active Infrastructure. --- ### Cop 3 - Local servers, services & content Our missions for today: discuss what challenges Community Networks are facing to implement and offer specific local services. What tools are at hand, what could be developed or adapted together? Ex. **billing, network management** What are motivations and visions for **content productions** by CNs? How to improve open source captive portals like **Pirania**? This is not a standalone session but in dialogue with the otherCoPs. It is an OPEN Space for collaborations and diversity is welcome (so we can invite others to join!). --- ## Today's discussion and sharing --- ## Who is in the house... 1. Name 2. Main topic of interest 3. Suggestions and expectations for collaboration --- ### Learning drivers - struggles - upcoming projects - improving the craft - share the road with others --- ### Some example topics that could be explored --- ## Billing and Network management (local Services) - What different billing platforms are in use? - What accountability and billing strategies are needed in CNs and which are the usecases for them? (time bound, bandwidth bound, amount of traffic-bound, time bank-bound, etc.) - How does Pirania integrate with billing platforms? How to control QOS across the mesh network? --- ## Captive Portal (Pirania) - What are the captive portal development needs for CNs? - How to improve LibreMesh based Pirania? - Can Captive Portals be integrated directly into Open-WRT or used with Ubiquiti and Mikrotik kit - What are the limitations of other commercial captive portals and how they integrate with LibreMesh? --- ## Content creation (& sharing & storage) - What hardware/software options/use cases are there for content creation? - What services are wanted/needed (e.g streaming - audio and video, blogging, captive portal, educational platforms…)? How to do collective implementation, management and maintenance of them? - What are the relative benefits of different offline and online application hosting management platforms such as Nimble, and Yunohost? - What role is there for elrepo.io and other local content propagation tools such as SSB? - Is content/media production a way to also generate income for community members and engage youth, elders and women? How? --- ### Topics you would like to explore 1. What topics are you currently exploring? 2. Which ones are in your bucket list? --- ## Next steps --- ### Proposal We want to support the growth of these spaces of learning, so as an initial commitment we have allocated U$S 10.000 to each CoP that you will be able to decide how to invest. --- ### Resource allocation Potential use: - cocreation - materials - adoption - replication - to localize, for others to replicate. --- ### how do we communicate We will send an email with the recording and a link to the notes from this meeting. --- ### An emergent structure What we will do from LOCNET/WP4 is to share what was done and invite you for the next meeting very soon. --- ### final round of comments/proposals --- ### Next CoP meetings > Save the date! 04/04 | 13UTC CoP 4 Kick-off (sustainability) 06/04 | 13UTC CoP 5 Kick-off (value driven CNs)
