# Memetic Propagation and Mediation ## Illustrated through an example of a Neighbourhood ### Articulating Culture Specifically for Memetic Propagation Agent Centric technologies like Holochain allow us to piece together modular reputational components ([As articulated in this list](https://sacred-capital.gitbook.io/sacred-capital/documentation/technical/reputation-data-types)) ![](https://i.imgur.com/4OV6Lnb.png) ### Memetic Mediation: The key to scalable reputational currencies Memetic Bridges allow people to show up in a new ecosystem, network or community with reputation data that they have earned elsewhere. The simplest form of establishing a bridge is a community to ‘proposing’ a bridge, and the holder of the reputation ‘consenting’ (see diagram below). There are nuances to the ‘quality of the bridge’ which will be discussed at a later point. This process of building broad-spectrum bridges between communities that foster collaborative patterns between them is termed 'Memetic Mediation' ![](https://i.imgur.com/toT01uj.png) ## Simplistic Overview of Memetic Bridge Establishment ![](https://i.imgur.com/uT95rEU.png) Establishing a basic Memetic Bridge of this kinds allows us to 'import' reputation data from another context. The nuances to this bridging will be discussed in a specific technical document, but for now here are some general guidelines to bridging in Holochain environments: - Avoid bridging during validation rules. It is not certain that all other nodes on the DHT will have the DNA installed, so it could lead to serious validation issues. - Fraudulent validation in another DNA can be identified by building the 'strength of the bridge' over time. In other words, when more nodes bridge across DNAs, the possibilities of warrants getting identified improve. - Reputation data that is gained through bridging should ideally be stored as an entry. ### Memetic Propagation in a Neighbourhood: Assume the example of a neighbourhood, such as [Economikit](https://hackmd.io/@economikit-alliance/HkJhVKerI). - Economikit is a collective of a few hundred members. There is high priority given to 'quality conversations' i.e. the highest rated individuals receive the voices most often. ![](https://i.imgur.com/cHG3rR9.png) - Economikit validates contributions in the form of comments/articles/blogs from it's members through '[likes](https://github.com/sacredcapital/Reputation-likes)'. The overal ranking of community members is derived by weighting the number of likes by the existing rank of he member that offered the like (*maybe even the number of contributions in a given period*); and later applying an exponential distribution curve - The exponential distribution curve allows Economikit governance to specifically control what percentage of members occupy the top percentiles of the community. ![](https://i.imgur.com/T4XO9Mp.png) - The ranks define the order in which members articles/comments show up in feeds, which members receive invitations to be part of the governance and shape the direction of Economikit, and even other benefits which could be monetary and otherwise. - When a new member joins the collective, they are invited to contribute to the collective. As they contribute to the network, existing members validate their work through 'likes'. Through the weighting of likes with existing ranks, the collective ensures that contributions that resonate most with the specified objectives of Economikit find themselves amplified the most. Members that resonate closest with Economikit culture, are rewarded with the highest ranks - By articulating the culture so specifically, Economikit creates a formal system for amplifying voices. This ensures anyone can join the network without the need for 'vouches' (which can be very monolithic moat-like systems) and move things towards more nuanced filters for communities. ### The Benefits of Memetic Mediation Let's assume a scenario where Economikit has grown to a collective of a few hundred members, and is confident of it's articulated culture functioning appropriately. They now have the option of building Memetic Bridges to a couple allied collectives, who share similar objectives. Here are some examples of what is possible with a combination of Memetic Bridging and Propagation ### 1. Broadening the pool of members Assume there is a related collective called Economi-kittens that have similar conversations about economik tool-kits. Some members of Economikit have also been active in Economi-Kittens. ![](https://i.imgur.com/WIeFNMY.png) - Establish a bridge with Kittens. - Ask members if they have any existing presence with kittens. IF so, they may port their reputation data from Kittens to Economikit if they like - Kittens also uses likes to validate members (if they use other metrics like upvotes/claps etc. these can be translated to Economikit language) - When new members enter, their existing likes are converted, but weighted by existing ranks within Economikit. So if a member received 1000 likes within kittens, but from non-economikit members or low ranking economikt members, it doesn't count as much as someone receiving 100 likes but from economikit high ranked members. - Adjoining chart showcases what the bridge may result in. A broader number of members while ensuring culture remains same. - Also, the bridge introduces a dependency on Kittens. Kittens may choose to reciprocate, but the bridge could be considered a collaborative feedback loop between the two collectives. We will later explore how this loop can also unlock monetary transactions for either. These loops are critical in developing mutually beneficial patterns between communities. ![](https://i.imgur.com/Xj9THkC.png) ### 2. Adding new flavours to the culture Adding bridges from value-flows community as well. The leaders of Economikit feel like it needs to be grounded in more VF-style values. ![](https://i.imgur.com/rZdibgW.png) Economikit introduces a bridge from VF, with a 0.3x weightage from their community. This adds a VF flavour to the culture. ![](https://i.imgur.com/OAc20u1.png) ### 3. Bridging done wrong Sensationalist community that shares economic content on a twitter-like platform. Economikit still weights all likes with the rank of who voted, but because it's a sensationalist platform, their own members vote quite recklessly. This results in a dilution of their own culture. @EuRK-JC-SEmD1HkDtmuqow: You would show this through a person who shit-posts on the twitter like platform who get's a high rating in Economikit. ![](https://i.imgur.com/Mu7CjiA.png) ### 4. Forking Economikit-Asia from Economikit Example of a member who likes it, but wants to include a tweak, say primarily for South Asia?. ![](https://i.imgur.com/8098HZO.png) EK-SA (Economikit South-Asia) is a group that specifically discusses Economikit themed topics, but in a South Asian context. They have precisely the same reputation architecture and governance structure. However, their discussions center around projects and systems in South-Asia. They invite existing Economikit members to participate in their collective, who can also place at stake reputation from the original collective. Economikit may also choose to accept Economikit-South-Asia reputation data if they think it will be relevant for their conversation. <Chart Not included: similar to #1> ### 5. Constructing complex cultures: Economikit members wish to host each other in their homes, through a 'couch-surfing' model. Economikit chooses to construct a complex reputation, to suggest what they think would be a 'good' couch-surfing host. ![](https://i.imgur.com/2kCGA9h.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/6yb8gU6.png) ### 6. Safety Ratings Generating the same safety rating for offline gatherings, but through an alternative approach. (Trying to capture negative behaviour) Reputation flag generated as an 'Or' function, with a minimum of 'n' other contexts involved. Definitely can be gamed, so should stick to options like the ones mentioned above. Building a metric as a 'good host' is more true in the distributed economy. (atleast in the initial days). It's easier to gauge what an individual 'did do in different contexts' as compared to building from 'what they didn't do in specific contexts'. (Sid to articulate this better) ![](https://i.imgur.com/tL7Aq42.png) ### 7. Input to other complex cultures: Economikit plugging into a gaming-design collective (Ratings plug into a complex pool of reputations) ### Monetary benefits: H-REA kicks in for things like barter, couch-surfing etc. #### P2P Lending More likes and ranking means more monetary generation ability (depends on whether economikit has monetary footprint) Allows us to play, mould and manipulate culture intentionally.
