# The Carpentries Region Nordics > Share information about what happened last year and the year before, and share goals for 2021, welcome to the new year, reintroduce selves, etc. (No required content, just an opportunity for communities to hear from their regional coordinators) ## Region in growth In [Nordic region](https://carpentries.org/regions_nordic/), [CodeRefinery](coderefinery.org) project (funded by Nordic e-Infrastructure collaboration, NeIC) has set its first Regional Coordinator late 2019 to support the growth of the Carpentries community and efforts in the Nordic region. [CodeRefinery](coderefinery.org) project offers hands-on trainings on best practice in research software development and management to advance FAIRness of research software and reproducible research, in a similar style to the Carpentries. Naoe Tatara at University of Oslo has been serving as the Regional Coordinator. Besides CodeRefinery/NeIC as a platinum member organization, the Nordic region has 3 silver member organizations; - University of Oslo in Norway, - the allyship of KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, & Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and - University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Except for University of Oslo, they are relatively new member organizations. We see the growth in the number of instructors in this region as well: the region has 63 certified instructors (who concented to publish their profile). ## Workshops in years around 2020 Due to the pandemic situation that affect the Carpentries workshops globally, we experienced drastic changes in delivery format and coodination of workshops, as well as cancels and postponement. The summary below shows the number of both self-organized and centrally organized workshops and format in each country in the Nordic region in 2019 and 2020 plus 2021 so far (self-organized workshops include those based on Carpentries lesson mateirals but not fulfilling criteria as a standard Carpentries workshop). In Norway, 3 workshops were held in person in September-October 2020, but the size of the workshops is much smaller (typically around 10) than those held before the pandemic (typically a bit over 30). ### In 2020-2021 | Format | Norway | Sweden | Denmark | Finland | Estonia | | ------ | ------ | --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | ------- | ------- | | Online | 8 (*a) | 2 | 1 (*b) | 0 | 0 | | In-person | 8 | 0 | 2 (*c) | 0 | 0 | | Cancel |2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | *a: including 1 open to other countries as well *b: in "blended" manner of online and in-person *c: including the 1 above in blended manner ### In 2019 | Format | Norway | Sweden | Denmark | Finland | Estonia | | ------ | ------ | --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | ------- | ------- | | In-person | 10 | 5 (*e) | 3 | 1 | 1 | *e: including 1 Training The Trainer event ## Community building forward Nordic region organized so far two social meet-up events, [one in CarpentryCon2020](https://2020.carpentrycon.org/schedule/#session-48) and another as [a community discussion](https://carpentries.org/blog/2020/12/Community-discussion-in-Nordic-and-Baltic-countries/). From May, we will have a monthly Nordic community discussion on **the 10th every month** at the following time; - 12:00-13:00 Iceland time, - 14:00-15:00 CE(S)T (Norway, Denmark and Sweden), and - 15:00-16:00 EE(S)T (Finland and Estonia), so that those who have regular weekly meetings etc. may also have chance to attend. Of course some months we have 10th on weekend, but then we will either skip that month or we still have it on another date in that month. We will have community discussion calendar updated after 20th April. We have [local-nordic mailing list](https://carpentries.topicbox.com/groups/local-nordic). If you are a Carpentries community member in Nordic region, please subscribe to the local mailing list. Also please suggest any idea further development of this regional community! ## Opportunities for eligible organizations As a Carpentries platinum member, [CodeRefinery can offer eligible organizations access to a centrally organized Carpentries workshop and to the Carpentries instructor trainings](https://coderefinery.org/about/project/#membership-with-the-carpentries).
