Currently, we cannot trust OSM to have a persistent identifier that corresponds to a real world feature. For example, node 1 has been the prime meridian, a bike rental, a restaurant and most recently a communications tower. We have been sidestepping this by adding Wikidata identifiers to OSM objects, but Wikidata doesn't represent the world in as much depth and breadth as OSM does. ...why is this important... ...what would a solution look like?...
