World of Warcraft Invites Legacy Server Team to a Meeting

World of Warcraft invites legacy server team to meet for talks

The team behind a fan-run version of World of Warcraft has secured an appointment with the game's creator following an open campaign.
Wow Servers

In April, the developer Blizzard Entertainment shut down Nostalrius, an unofficial server that was running an older, unsupported version of the game.

This led to over 250,000 people signing an online petition asking Blizzard for support for legacy servers.

It has now agreed to meet with the team from Nostalrius to discuss the issue.

The private server played an original version of the game that is so popular, sometimes called"vanilla" or "vanilla" version which is a reflection of the game's release in 2004.

WoW has seen a variety of updates and patches over the years since its launch. Some players feel this has impacted the overall experience.

After Blizzard issued warnings in April, Nostalrius was closed down. This sparked a public debate among fans. The developer is now saying it will invite Nostalrius to its California headquarters for talks, but a time has not been set.

The company also suggested a "pristine" server. This would eliminate some of the modern game's enhancements, but still run within the current version.

Nostalrius believes that Blizzard will hold formal meetings. It hopes that the company will be an advocate for the community and take over legal responsibility for legacy servers.

"We feel we are now not only the admins of a private server, we are also ambassadors for an entire movement for the entire World of Warcraft community that wants to see game history restored," they wrote in an online forum post.

"It is a significant responsibility. Our first and foremost focus now is to fulfil the requirements of the community by carrying your voice to Blizzard directly."

Blizzard has never supported legacy servers in its own game, making illegal private servers the only option to play the "classic" game.

Blizzard claimed that the issue of "classic" servers was discussed for years however, it claimed that it was not feasible to implement "without extreme difficulty". It also stated that it would not allow the private Nostalrius server to remain in operation, since "failure to protect against intellectual property infringement could damage Blizzard's rights".

Fans expressed mixed reactions to Blizzard's tentative discussions. Some are concerned that official legacy servers could pull company resources away from creating new content for the main version of the game. Others, including former WoW developer Mark Kern - said legacy servers were still needed.

"WoW is an important game - it's a part of gaming history - however there's no legal means for people to enjoy its earlier versions or discover where it all came from," Mr Kern said in a video message to Blizzard.

World of Warcraft had almost 12 million players at its peak in 2010. Today it has about five million paying customers. Nostalrius had around 150,000 active users when it was shut down on 10 April.

Warcraft fans are furious over server shutdown

14 April 2016
