# EPSRC/STFC RSE Fellowship call 2020 ## Initial internal call webpage The 2020 call for [EPSRC/STFC RSE Fellowships](https://epsrc.ukri.org/funding/calls/research-software-engineer-fellowships-2020/) opened on 30 June 2020. The RSE Fellowship scheme aims to recognise the contribution of RSEs who are driving the development of high-quality research software and demonstrating leadership in embedding the vital role of software in disciplinary and institutional research cultures. An RSE Fellowship is a personal award, designed to provide the recipient with the necessary support to contribute to these aims. Fellows are provided with significant resources in order to pursue their vision and establish or develop RSE activities within their institution. Up to £4.5 million of funding is available from EPSRC to support approximately four to eight RSE Fellows in the EPSRC remit for a duration of up to five years and up to £0.6 million of funding is available from STFC to support one RSE Fellow in the STFC remit for a duration of up to five years. This funding can be used for the fellow's own salary and up to 1 FTE of additional RSE or pos-doctoral researcher support. ### Application process Candidates are invited to submit an outline proposal in the first instance. Outlines will be considered by an expert panel. Successful applications will be invited to submit full proposals which will be considered by an expert panel, resulting in an invite to interview. To manage demand, **applications from each host organisation will be capped at two**. Turing will be running an internal selection process, which will open on Monday 06 July 2020 and close on Friday 31 July 2020. The Turing will then work with the two selected candidates to develop a strong application with a strong, tailored letter of support from the institiute ### Eligibility ## Bulletin text # NOTES A place to co-ordinate the Turing's internal call and submissions to the [EPSRC/STFC RSE Fellowship call 2020](https://epsrc.ukri.org/funding/calls/research-software-engineer-fellowships-2020/). The call opened on 30 June 2020 and the deadline for outline submissions is **18 August 2020 at 4pm**. There is a limit of 2 applicants per institute, so we will need to run an internal sift. The letter of support from the host institute is also going to be critical for applicants’ success, so we should look to run our internal sift early enough to provide support to the selected applicants to shape strong applications and ensure our letters of support are tailored to both the requirements of the grant and the individual applications. ## Call summary The contribution of Research Software Engineers (RSEs) to research outcomes is increasingly recognised within the UK research landscape. Research Software Engineers are key members of computational research teams who provide the critical skills required to develop, support and evolve software to tackle the research challenges they face. The role of the RSE Fellow is expected to be fully integrated and supported by their Host Institution. As such, an application to this call will require significant effort and co-ordination with your Host Institution to supply the required documentation and endorsements. This Research Software Engineer (RSE) Fellowships call will provide support for a further cohort of RSE Fellows for a period of up to five years.
