# EXPOS20 From Homer to Jay-Z
Craft & Complexity in Verbal Art and Oral Tradition

## Background
* Where are they now?
* Standard Expos20 research paper, 9-10 pages on a topic of their choosing
* They have narrowed in on their research question, they are looking for sources now
* The paper length can be overwhemling, and Sheza trying to figure out how to break it down and structure it.
* They are working on their annotated bibliography, will have it ready by Monday then will move on to the drafting phase.
* Wants help outlining. Visualizing and mapping out the structure.
* Ideas for the session
* BEAT activity? Activity around source functions.
* Lyrics, theoretical model, historical context…

* Oral-formulaic composition - poets have a storehouse of fomulas that are in the right meter and they add to that
* Jay-Z doesn't write down his lyrics! Improvises his songs.
* Chorus vs. verse
* form and content distinction
* Rewrite a rap verse that you know by heart and tweak it in a way that makes it feel "wrong",
* messing with the number of syllables in a word so that it doesn't match with the meter
* moving it to a different language that doesn't match
