- We need a blog post on the website, as well (Nigel mentioned in Feb 18 meeting)
- Discuss different commands that are faster.
- Valkey blog should be more technical in nature vs markety
- Nigel can collaborate with Martin and Ricardo from Percona
- Modules

- Cupcakes on expo floor - April 2 in tandem with PR?
- 'Year in the Life of Valkey' write up to post in tandem with the 1-year anniversary of Valkey - Go 1-week prior to KubeCon?
- LDAP discussion with Lori (Madelyn)
- looped in Ricardo - discussing auth stuff there (Oracle, AWS, Percona, and NetApp all in discussion. Auth module with adapters?)
- Valkey Deck Template
- Nanci emailed Mariana, no response. Madelyn, did she mention this in last week's website meeting, by chance? (Madelyn poked her in meeting, Mariana hadn't read email, Nanci to re-ping)
- How to release and package modules - Was this discussed in yesterday's core meeting?
- Consensus to have 2 distros of Valkey - one with and one without modules. Without modules will look like what it looks like today (twice a year) - include a distro with all the modules and whatever we development later down the line. They're both semantic versioning; might update module distro more frequently. Patch versions
- Semantic versioning in numeric field, patch, plus major, plus minor version will give numeric value.
- Need to put in blog post for KubeCon? No. This won't be ready until OSS Summit NA.
- Tazama Discussion
- Three of their databases changed licenses at the same time, ran out of money. Tried focusing convo on Valkey, it was the easiest drop and replace. 'it saved us time, only had to spend was engineering hours for migration' - Valkey was easy to swap

- They're part of Gates Foundation
- Decrease in overhead
- Shared tech specs with us

- One of the sponsors hosts Symphony (php) - they opened a pr to support Valkey (big win for another OSS project adopting Valkey) - https://github.com/symfony/symfony/pull/59869
- People said migration was really easy
- no downtime
- saving money
- heard about it at the beginning of a half hour meeting and migrated by the end of it
- blog aggregator - someone from aiven maintains it pulling blogs from all over that discuss Valkey
- do we want to incorporate this into the website or anything else?
- concerned that the blogs might be negative about Valkey since there's no filter on sentiment for the blog posts
- Requires human curation - we should look through and see what we can cross-post
- Blog Posts + Videos
- Online Engagements, i.e. Webinars, Interviews
Discussion Topics + Big Ideas for Valkey
Input here if there is anything you wish to discuss for the group to brainstorm and collectively work on, i.e. Valkey Conference, moving Valkey to a funded Linux Foundation project with a governing board, etc.

We could market it as these are the three modules and come OSSNA they will all be released as a bundle. Also bring in Lori's press person. Nanci to start email chain to get the convo started.

- Pitching to PR about 'A year in the life of Valkey' refine pitch, meet the forkers angle - quotes from the main team to fork it. There's a deadline to submit PR for marketing tie in for sponsorship. Could add to a tie-in to conversations at the booth.
- Launching 8.1 in April, can use that as a focal point and build momentum from April through August with all the different events.
- Lori to own 'A Year in the Life of Valkey'
- Lori will have Percona's PR person on next week's call with a skeleton piece and fill in the blank of where we need quotes and other missing pieces.
- Nigel: If we are targeting KubeCon, we can utilize CNCF projects who have adopted Valkey and add that into the press release/talking point at the event.
Action Items
- Lori and Nigel to work together on migration story with Tazama
- Madelyn to update the Valkey Deck. As a team, moving forward, we will all work on updating - keeping this deck in mind to update when conversations and decisions arise that affect the messaging in the deck.
- We will also work on creating a wealth of shared collateral.
- Nigel to work with Ricardo and Martin from Percona to craft the blog post for 8.1 GA release. The blog post should be more technical than marketing content.
- Update to conversations about Valkey Operator: Madelyn met with Hyperspike who already has an operator for Redis and will port it to Valkey, donating it to Valkey.
- Madelyn would like feedback, testing, and support here.
- Madelyn to make slack channel public as it is private right now. Please reach out to Madelyn to join the channel for Valkey operator to participate.
- Lori to write abstract idea to submit for the All Things Open CFP. General idea for 'Why Valkey' and include companies who were part of the initial forking to tell their stories. This could be a panel or collab between two companies.
- 'Year in the Life of Valkey' write up to post in tandem with the 1-year anniversary of Valkey. Lori to have an initial skeleton draft to present at next week's meeting. We could also target adoption stories from CNCF projects (touch base with Nigel)

Core Features
Hash field expiration
- https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey/issues/640
- The top data structure feature request on Redis, and now Valkey, was to implement element-level Time-to-Live (TTL) functionality within the collection datatypes, most notably the hash data structure. Currently, users who need this granular control over element expiration must rely on custom client-side logic or Lua scripts, which can require maintaining separate systems to listen to key-space notifications and are less efficient. Supporting this feature natively would simplify the design and implementation of these features for users and improve performance. The Team is actively working on finalizing the design before starting the implementation.
Cache efficient main dictionary
- https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey/issues/169
- This is an initiative to develop a new cache efficient hash set that should have less memory-overhead and be more performant by better taking advantage of modern hardware. This hash set will be used to improve various data-structures within the engine including the main dictionary, the expiry table, pubsub, hashes, sets, sorted sets, and more. We expect to save 30B per entry, and improve overall get/set performance by 10-15%, with even greater improvements for datatypes that use additional hash sets. Much of the OSS work has been implemented and PRs are in-review. We will have a design review meeting soon to go over hashset design and the plan for integrating the changes into ElastiCache.
Check and set functionality
- https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey/issues/1215
- A simple feature that allows conditional updates of key value pairs based on the current value. A frequently requested feature in Redis, that was never added because it conflicted with
WATCH
. Many users implement this today with LUA scripting.
Modules
The Valkey project is working on a distribution of Valkey that also includes optional extensions called modules. The specific distribution mechanism is still being investigated. The Valkey TSC is considering the following approaches:
- Fully integrated deployment: In the next major version, Valkey will come pre-deployed with all of the modules and users can choose which ones to enable. The official Valkey container will come deployed with all available modules, which can be enabled/configured. This is similar to how Redis is deployed today.
- Pros:
- Simplest user experience as there will just be a single Valkey distribution.
- Cons:
- Requires modules and core project to synchronize major/minor versions, which will require more maintenance effort as the core has long version lifespan.
- Unnecessary software bloat and complexity for users that just want core functionality. CVEs might force users who care about fixes into more regular patches.
- Secondary distribution channel: Each module will have it's own versioning scheme, but we will release a bundle of the modules along with a specific engine version (with some name like
valkey-stack
, valkey-extensions
, etc). This distribution will have it's own container and download from the main website. This collection of modules and core version will be tightly validated. For example, valkey-stack
version 1.2 might contain two modules and be based off of valkey-server
8.1 and the full set of tests will be validated against specifically that version. Compatibility between other core versions, modules versions, or modules being best effort.
- Pros:
- Users will have two options of well tested and validated distributions.
- Cons:
- Documentation becomes more fragmented as some features are core and some are in the stack.
- Users may not realize they are missing out on features. This was apparently a concern with Redis, but unclear how material this was an issue.
- Decoupled distribution mechanism: We will release each module individually with its own
- Pros:
- Empowers individual module owners with the mo
- Cons:
- There is not authoritative set of modules that a user can pull to get a good experience.
Valkey JSON
Valkey Bloom
- https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey-rfc/blob/main/Bloom.md
- Valkey Bloom is a new module that adds the probabilistic bloom filter datastructure, which is a common use case in advertisement. It is a space efficient data structure which can tell you if an item is maybe in a set or definitely not in a set. It's one of many probabilistic data structures available in RedisBloom.
Valkey Vector Search
- https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey-rfc/pull/8
- Valkey Vector Search is a new module that adds vector similar search capabilities to Valkey. The RFC is still in early development, but the code is being contributed by Google based off their internal implementation.

- how to ensure continuity with paid subscription
- Do Valkey qualify for an "free plan" (501 company in the US)? CDF has this and everything disappears after 90 days. This is a problem for some projects. LF is unable to get new projects onboarded to the free version. https://slack.com/help/articles/204368833-Apply-for-the-Slack-for-Nonprofits-discount
- Has a matrix and discord already (on community page) and basically empty. Madelyn is watching them.
- Redis community was on slack and Redis paid for that slack. Community/core developers did not want to do something else.

- Need: Go examples for Valkey (see here: https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/go-redis/redis/v8 vs https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/valkey-io/valkey-go)
- Most common attendee questions: What is it?; For those that knew what it was: How do we know this is THE fork, there were a few. Is this similar to OpenTofu/will it run into the same legal complications? Are the client libraries all the same? Why should I migrate now if we don't need to upgrade Redis yet?
