Introduction by Toby
- Uniswap report: a lot did not make it in there
- Focus on how possible self-organization of DAOs - has not really happened within Uniswap
- Similarities to online brand comm'ties/fandoms/...
- Ethereum Foundation become a centralized ecosystem for their grants.
- Within Uniswap after airdrop unclear how funds should be allocated
- Many community members did not see the treasury usage for now as not being legitimate
- Very much feels like a 'landgrab' at the moment
- Using them for public goods might alleviate this issue - but what needs to be in place for this to be the case?
- You need the majority of tokenholders (also the small to be in favor of this)
- You need to create the narrative for this
- What other uses of treasury funds are legitimate? This is a crucial discussion any DAO with funds needs to have.
- If the 'core team' does not express this, the contributors, the community needs to have this discussion
Discussion:
- Request for 'more details' was requested by the 'community' and this was mainly denied.
- What is lobbying? And what 'is' the proper way to do governance? Should the people who are actively speaking up the people who need to be the decision makers?
- Public library discussion: do we create the vision and then have the community vote or do we make the actual decisions?
- The community needs leadership, so if no one has issues with proposed decisions we should execute (ryan)
- Orienting ourselves around a shared vision is crucial (defining public goods, ... ) and also how we can actually engage a very diverse community
- About 50% of participants went through Kernel, what is Kernel for me?
- Kernel is a place where culture gets shared and formed into existence. People learn so much about blockchain and ethos of why we are here. kernel felt like creating with your peers, learning what already exists, and practicing what you preach.
- Kris: I saw this and heard many people telling me "oh I'm getting it because now I'm living it!" as they went through Kernel. And it's a good intro / entry point to the Gitcoin family.
- Paul: I got into kernel bcs of Gitcoin. I found through Kernel the people who thought more deeply about it. Really spoke to me. I wanted to do something more, and from Gitcoin to Kernel and back to Gitcoin :)
- Scott: a lot of the thinking about intentional communities in crypto only started 6 months to a year ago (with some exceptions). To the point about defining values, one thing we previously talked about was the idea of structuring *experiments about how we might get projects to care about & fund these things*. One place to start is convincing Web 2 people that OSS is worth funding.
- David: What could be commonalities, might be good to write out what our vision is on this, disagreement is good
- Maybe this call is the exercise in itself?
- Lani: public goods could be focused on what the government is lacking in providing to people
- Scott: +1 on all the ideas. Where should we start to compile the notes on this? Where do we go from here?
- Toby: we need to not get lost in definitions. Assume there is alignment on a basic level. We need to focus on how to provide a process, a framework to approach this topic that we can share with other groups. It would be good to concretize what our +/- shared mission statement is.
- David: Rough definition/thesis is worth it, but should be flexible and not be bogged down by this. We have a limited source of funds within Seasons, so for now we need to have some boundaries to have the maximum impact.
- Scott: Are we a research body vs action-oriented grants funding committee (RFP)?
Kris: We're probably both. Need to separate to be efficient. Library call is focus on research to have strategic thoughts to bring Gitcoin proposals and get moonshot collective (where we can build)
- Scott: 'CSR'/ops call could be a separate track/call vs this more theoretical/in-depth discussion call: both valuable
- Henry: We want to be the observer but actually getting involved is crucial
- David: can help with things other than money -> time/writing/ideas/leadership
- Lani: We can support public goods projects in so many other ways than just money. Help them to establish a system for self-perpetuation can be incredibly valuable.
- Toby: Having a bias towards action within this call and not separating at this moment could be helpful. Practical examples of 'execution':
- Funding other groups
- iteration of the RFP
- "Propagandizing" our collective viewpoints
- Consultative relationship with other projects / become public goods/wealth advisors
- Form an expert circle, eg open source projects/... web3 philanthropy
- Moonshot Collective: building things based on what comes out of consultation
- Get RFPs funded under new pools of funding from other protocols // Uniswap
- benefit: you can subelements of project X get funded & built very easily
- Certified public goods as an ISO standard.
- How do we get more money in a public goods funds? How do we become regenerative? eg. university endowments that are for perpetuity
- How do we get more money in a public goods funds?
- How do we get people on the path of caring for public goods. why > what > how. eg. a reading list that we can share around and people can pick it up
- Spreading the gospel of public goods and how important is.
- Give public good champions airtime and elevate their work.
- Remind other people that certain coordination tools are actually public goods and how they can use it, recipes, [playbooks](https://www.atlassian.com/team-playbook/plays?&search=pos).
- QZ: Moving from definition of public goods to focus on the 'how'. Quite common to have 'chapters' within the DAO, having a reading list could help too, we all come across similar problems. Certified public goods (like the [SGClean mark](https://www.sgclean.gov.sg/join/for-owners/how-to-be-certified/) to show that a company is following best practices) as an [ISO standard.](https://ursfe.com.sg/iso-certifications-singapore-choose-us/#:~:text=ISO%20Certification%20in%20Singapore%20is,18001%2C%20are%20the%20most%20popular.)
- See more on QZ's points in the list above on practical applications :)
- Scott: Is putting an RFP playbook together useful? Still in the process of putting this together.
