# Drips User Engagements Plan and Approach
User time is precious time. For that reason it's important to have in mind exactly what we are trying to accomplish, before we engage with actual users. To my mind there are three classes of engagements that should be approached differently.
__1. Opportunity exploration type of interviews.__
The objective here is to discover new pain-points, needs and desires users have.
__2. Solution validation type of interviews.__
The objective here is to assess how well a solution we developed satisfies the users' pain-points, needs and desires.
__3. Pitch oriented engagements__
The objective here is to convince a user to try out a solution we developed.
Depending on the objective, jump on the relevant section below.
## Opportunity exploration interview
***A friendly welcome and thank you.***
How are you today?
Thank you for agreeing to help us out with developing Drips.
[Here share some context about the work we've been doing, without biasing the user].
Today, I will be asking you a few questions. I am interested in your experiences, so there are no right or wrong answers. Please answer with whatever comes to your mind, you won't hurt my feelings.
Do you have any questions before we begin?
***Open-ended context questions about the user***
Small talk
What kind of work do you do?
How long have you been doing that?
How did you get into that?
***Domain specific questions***
Tell me about the last time you [funded some FOSS project / crowdfunded / replace with whatever is of interest].
How did you hear about this product?
What made you want to try to use it?
What did you like about it?
What challenges did you encounter? What you didn't like about it?
What other products have you used for the same need?
What were you trying to accomplish by []?
***Drips specific questions***
[Only ask if you know the user has used Drips before.]
Can you tell me about the last time you used Drips?
How did you hear about Drips?
What made you want to try to use it?
What did you like about it?
What challenges did you encounter? What you didn't like about it?
How would you describe this product to a friend?
If you had 3 magic wishes to improve this product?
***Thank you and goodbye***
That's all! Thank you so much for helping us out. If you are interested, I can keep you updated as we develop our product.
## Solution validation interview
***A friendly welcome and thank you.***
How are you today?
Thank you for agreeing to help us out with developing Drips.
[Here share some context about the work we've been doing, without biasing the user].
Today, I will be showing you a product that we developed and will be asking you a few questions while you use it. As you navigate it, please think aloud. I didn't design this product, so you won't hurt my feelings with anything you say. You can only help us with your feedback.
Do you have any questions before we begin?
***Open-ended context questions about the user***
[Small talk, then slowly transition to the topic of interest]
What kind of work do you do?
How long have you been doing that?
How did you get into that?
Coming to crowdfunding [replace with other topic like funding public goods or streaming or whatever the user is interested in], when was the first time you considered it? Why?
What other products did you try for this?
What did you want them to do for you? What did you like or dislike about them?
Excellent!
***Introduce prototype***
Now I want to introduce you to a product we developed. Some things may not work quite yet. I will let you know.
As we go, please think aloud. Tell me what you are trying to do and how you think you can do it.
I didn't design this, so it won't hurt my feelings if you don't like something.
What do you think of this?
What do you expect that will do?
What goes through your mind when you are looking at this?
[repeat as the user navigates the prototype]
***Debrief questions***
What do you like about this product? What do you dislike?
How would you describe this product to a friend?
If you had 3 magic wishes to improve this product?
***Thank you and goodbye***
That's all! Thank you so much for helping us out. You've done a fantastic job, sharing your thoughts with me.
If you are interested, I can be keeping you updated as we develop our product.
