Social Psychology and Human-Robot Interaction: An Uneasy Marriage

ACM Human-Robot Interaction '18 (Bahar Irfan, Plymouth University)
paper

Problem

  • HRI researchers tend to not question psychology research, which is now known for failing to replicate

Method

Overview

  • godiva_ai interest
  • wanted to see difference having the following in mere presence when doing tasks
    • alone (no observer)
    • human observer
    • NAO (small robot)
    • Pepper (big robot)
  • but didn't go on to robot experiment because there were no differences when alone vs human observer

Improvements

No improvements, just replication

Data

Reality/Lessons

  • fear of being evaluated vs mere presence effect couldn't be separated
  • weak methods were used at the time; experiments were often conducted in presence of experimenter
  • 5k + 10 null results should be reported to make the original report in-significant

The conclusion chapter is beautiful

  • Replicate and reproduce
  • Null-results are interesting
  • Avoid questionable research practices (like p-value rounding)
  • Register your study
  • Avoid the Hawthorne effect (implement a distractor task)
  • Come up with HRI reference tasks (instead of reproducing social psych tasks)
  • From characterising three years of HRI to methodology and reporting recommendations(Baxter, 2016)

More Kawaii than a Real-Person Live Streamer: Understanding How the Otaku Community Engages with and Perceives Virtual YouTubers

CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems '21 (Zhicong Lu, 香港城市大学)
paper

Problem

  • viewers perceptions of VTubers as opposed to real-person streamers is not studied
  • social/cultural practices motivations of VTuber communites is not studied

Method

Overview

  • yota interest
  • Mandarin codes are translated into English
  • used affinity diagramming to analyze
  • Hyperpersonal Model in computer-mediated communication(CMC) suggests that viewers overinterpert cues from self-presentations of VTubers compared to face-to-face communications, becuase appearance and non-verbal behaviors of 中の人 are hidden

Improvements

  • Twitch live streaming has been researched

Data

  • interviewees
    • n = 21
    • Chinese young males on vtuber boards or gaming communities
    • min 1 view / week * 1 year

Reality/Lessons

  • All interviewees mentioned that they would not accept a new Nakanohito without confirming that the original Nakanohito was treated fairly.
    • 伝説の「ポケモンUSUM最強実況者全力決定戦 アシキvs夢咲楓」戦…
  • "P19 mentioned another VTuber who ran a show where most characters on the stage were represented by variants of the VTuber avatar that were all voiced by the same Nakanohito."
    • きになる
  • 4.4.1 Intentionally Maintaining Nakanohito and Avatar Disembodiment.

Designing identity in VTuber Era

ConVRgence Virtual Reality International Conference '20 (Liudmila Bredikhina, Geneva University)
paper

article

Problem

  • VTubers need new analysis becuase they are not avatars, as they must
    1. not be bound to a specific virtual world
    2. produce creative content

Method

Overview

  • yota interest
  • Survey

Improvements

  • Second Life and VRChat are studied

Data

  • 47 J, 4 Fr, 44 En

Reality/Lessons

  • Community building as part of identity building seen more in En, Fr
  • バ美肉 seen in J
