**Marvel's Most Underrated Villain Keeps Succeeding Because the Avengers & X-Men Underestimated Him**


Henry Gyrich does not get enough credit as one of Marvel's biggest villains, but in X-Men #29, readers see how far his dark legacy goes.

Marvel’s most underrated villain continues to succeed because the Avengers and the X-Men underestimate him. For Earth’s mutants, the situation has never been more critical, as Orchis has turned the heat up on them worldwide. Mutants are being killed, and in some cases, captured and experimented on. In X-Men #28, readers travel to a facility for captive mutants, one named in honor of a surprise foe to Earth’s heroic community.

X-Men #28 is written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Joshua Cassara. Firestar has seemingly defected to Orchis, but in reality she is working as a double agent, feeding inside information to the resistance. Orchis sends Firestar to negotiate a plea deal with the Juggernaut, and readers learn he is being kept at a “gulag” for mutants, called the Henry Gyrich Re-Education Center. For weeks, since the Hellfire Gala massacre, Firestar has been working here, being forced to watch her people suffer horrific torture, and even death.

Henry Gyrich Was One of Marvel's Most Underrated Villains

Long time Marvel fans will recognize the name Henry Gyrich. First appearing in 1977’s Avengers #165, Gyrich began his career as a government liaison to Earth’s superheroic community, starting with the Avengers. Gyrich strong-armed the team, revoking their security clearances and generally making life miserable for them. Gyrich has also spearheaded anti-mutant initiatives as well, making him one of the biggest overall threats to Earth’s heroes. He is a proponent of bringing superhumans, mutant or otherwise, under governmental control. Gyrich seemingly died at the hands of Abigail Brand recently, but as seen in X-Men #28, his legacy carries on.

Henry Gyrich's Legacy is Bad News for the X-Men

Henry Gyrich tried many times to exert his will over Earth’s heroic community, and this Re-Education Center would make him proud. The Center, run by Orchis with the blessing of the United States Government, represents everything Gyrich stood for. While calling itself a “Re-Education Center,” it is actually a chamber of horrors, where mutants are subjected to fates worse than death. The Center is Gyrich’s vision carried out to its horrifying conclusion. The mental toll working in the Center has taken on Firestar has been great.

Henry Gyrich was one of the greatest threats to Earth’s super-heroes, but he was never put into a class similar to Thanos or Kang. This no doubt owes to Gyrich being a mere human. While Gyrich wielded a great deal of power as a government agent, he did not commit atrocities on level with Thanos. Gyrich’s seeming low-key status, coupled with being virtually untouchable, led the Avengers and the X-Men to continually underestimate him, at their own peril. Despite not being counted as one, Henry Gyrich is one of the greatest foes Earth ever had, and now his legacy of control and oppression are being carried on by Orchis.
