# Node Runner's Guide to the Zeitgeist Migration

## Overview

Zeitgeist is migrating from Kusama to Polkadot on the Tuesday, Mar 14, 2023, 2pm UTC. The Zeitgeist Node Team will lock the business logic of the Zeitgeist chain on Kusama, and then prepare the chain for the migration to Polkadot. As soon as this is accomplished, the chain will halt. You may deactivate your Zeitgeist node for Kusama at this point. After a short downtime (expected 2h), you can instead launch the node with modified client or docker image and relaychain data (provided by us).

## Checklist

1. Download the [Polkadot snapshot](https://polkadot-snapshots.us-east-1.linodeobjects.com/polkadot-snapshots/polkadot/polkadot-14633907.tar.lz4) ahead of time.
1. Download the new [Zeitgeist Client](https://github.com/zeitgeistpm/zeitgeist/releases/download/v0.3.8-polkadot/zeitgeist_parachain) or [Zeitgeist Docker Image](https://hub.docker.com/layers/zeitgeistpm/zeitgeist-node-parachain/0.3.8-polkadot/images/sha256-2e85a6fcb9ef780399b219b6f916304a87d2ff3d50d81d5e5645e596cc6b19d4?context=explore) (`docker pull zeitgeistpm/zeitgeist-node-parachain:0.3.8-polkadot`)
1. Deactivate your Zeitgeist node for Kusama when you receive our signal that the Kusama chain has successfully halted (your node should _not_ be receiving blocks at this point).
1. Replace the old relaychain data with the new relaychain data. Go to the database path of your node, delete the `kusama` folder (or rename it to something innocuous like `kusama~`) and move the `polkadot` folder from the snapshot that you downloaded earlier into the database path.
1. Launch the node with the new client or docker image.

## In Case of Emergency

While we are confident that the migration will execute successfully, we have prepared a [contingency plan](https://hackmd.io/9AvtlSmNR--Q8zXWTHE9iw?view#Recovery) in case anything unexpected happens during the migration. This plan allows us to recover the chain and retry the migration or return to Kusama to regroup. Should anything happen we will keep you posted in [#node-operators] on Discord.
