It provides a Linux-based environment for decentralized applications (dApps), allowing developers to write smart contracts and dApps using conventional software stacks. Here’s how it utilizes Linux: - **Linux Runtime:** Cartesi creates a virtual machine (VM) that runs a full Linux OS. This allows dApps to leverage the rich ecosystem of Linux software, tools, and libraries, enabling more complex computations off-chain. - **Application-Specific Rollups:** Each dApp operates its own VM, which reduces congestion and competition for resources compared to traditional blockchains. This isolation ensures that computationally intensive tasks don’t interfere with each other. - **Compatibility and Flexibility:** By using Linux, Cartesi makes it easier for developers familiar with traditional software development to build and deploy dApps. This bridges the gap between conventional and blockchain programming environments. - **Off-Chain Computation:** Complex calculations are performed off-chain in the Cartesi VM and later verified on-chain, combining the security of the blockchain with the efficiency of off-chain processing. ## Cartesi Residency Proposal ### What can be expected in this cohort? - 7 days of learning in a hands-on environment - Full commitment - Accommodations with other developers - Shared meals - Long hours - Tough learning environment - New friendships with other builders ### What is not a part of this cohort? - Non-Cartesi compatible building ### Objectives - **Foster Innovation:** Encourage developers to create innovative solutions using Cartesi. - **Build Community Engagement:** Strengthen the community around Kenya to use Cartesi. - **Generate Sustainable Projects:** Support the creation of viable projects. ### Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) **Onboard and Push For Developer Participation:** - Selection process of 30 intermediate-level developers to participate in the residency. ### Event Plan **Phase 1: Planning and Promotion (2 weeks)** - Promote the residency cohort through various channels (developer channels, WhatsApp communities). **Phase 2: Developer Selection Process (2 weeks)** - Utilize the bounty platform in order to incentive developers to take the Cartesi Udemy course - Short list 30 developers to go through residency program - Prepare selected developers to ensure smooth transistion into the cohort **Phase 3: Residency Execution (1 week)** - Host the residency cohort, providing a collaborative space for developers. **Phase 4: Post-Event Evaluation and Development (2 weeks)** - Evaluate the learnings from the residency. - Provide additional support and resources to promising projects. - Collect feedback from participants to refine future events. ### Expected Outcomes - **User Engagement:** Increased interest and engagement in Cartesi tools among the developer community. - **Adoption and Integration:** Successful integration into at least 5 projects, leading to further adoption and potential for additional grants. - **Increase in Cartesi Grant Applications:** Increase in the number of projects from our developer communities. ## Budget | Item | Cost (USD) | |-----------------------------------|------------------| | Total Direct Residency Costs (Food, Accommodation, Conference Room, etc.) | TBD | | Total Sponsorship Costs (Sponsor Devs from outside Kenya ) | $1000 | | Total Administrative Costs | $4,500.00 | | **Total** | **$TBD based on Accomadation chosen** | For a full breakdown of costs check out the [budget sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15xafgrG32FajwE6byZzVtPsPHylz77JEV92NniXAR_s/edit?usp=sharing). ## Future Plans Based on the success of the initial residency cohort, we plan to organize follow-up events and provide continuous support to allow other community members a chance to participate in the ecosystem. This will ensure sustained growth and adoption of Cartesi in the broader Web3 ecosystem. We have many ideas on how to incorporate Cartesi into our future hackathons and in-person lab sessions. ## Conclusion Hosting a Cartesi Residency program aligns with our commitment to fostering innovation and community engagement. We are confident that this program will significantly benefit the Cartesi ecosystem and lead to the development of Linux-based decentralized applications (dApps), allowing developers to write smart contracts and dApps using conventional software stacks. We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with Cartesi on this innovative project and appreciate your consideration of our residency cohort proposal.
