# Meeting with James
## Acronyms
- Autonomous Marine Operations Planning
- PDC: UK Polar Data Centre
## Intro
- has worked closely with Scott = RSE, new position with BAS
- hiring 3 more RSEs currently
- met with Cass and Chris = engage with TRIC DT, we (BAS) need to say what we need help with.
- BAS groups:
- [AI Lab](https://www.bas.ac.uk/team/science-teams/ai-lab/)
- [AME department](https://www.bas.ac.uk/team/operational-teams/engineering-and-technology/marine-engineering/)
- [Mapping and Geographic Information Centre (MAGIC)](https://www.bas.ac.uk/data/our-data/maps/mapping-antarctica/)
- IT
- data centre —> environmental data service (NERC)
- (Also Innovation Directorate)
- september - march? (operational stuff happening at BAS)
- BAS TRIC-DT collab possibilities?
- community-oriented approach to counter siloing and reactive work and enforce interoperability and generalisability (BAS, TRIC, IMFe, TWINE)
- governance needed
- TRIC to suggest best practices that could translate to BAS governance/operations
- For information more than collab: Turing way expert in residence: Lucy Stephenson https://www.turing.ac.uk/turing-way-practitioners-hub/eirs
- case study assessment
- Projects
- Solving infrastructure problems associated with DT tech. Taking IceNet research and making it useful in perpetuity (before DT). = Most fully-formed software product (there will be many more of these kinds of software). They need pipelines, interoperability, etc. We don't build DT but need to build the LEGO!
- Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfmVOaR_YCg
- First involved because helping Tom out, supporting him scale. (Important point: Researchers aren't trained RSE or IT infrastructure, but often need it!)
- challenge: proof of concept infrastructure that allows for research to grow incrementally
- Split into:
- IceNet core: various research threads
- WWF: collaboration with Nunavut govt, Caribou conservation project.
- Infrastructure: using IceNet forecast, and building cloud infrastructure + dashboard
- [SDA route planner](https://www.bas.ac.uk/project/polarroute/). Big team at BAS. Maria Fox. Jonny Smith Autonomous Marine Operations Planning. James has helped with infrastructure here as well.
- How do we build resilience into the platforms we're building? + scalability
- knowledge-shares?
- IMFe work, digital twin hub (Justin)
- Current phase will wrap up in Nov. Will be another paper.
- TWINE call, we might be get involved with.
- There will be continuity where projects will pick up where IMFe dropped off.
- TRIC-DT will likely be instrumental in carrying the torch: (a) maintaining/nurturing a community that has been arising in NERC (UKHO?), DT Hub, etc. (b) how do we build things in a consistent manner: we need to build more, not just think. Look at practical application — how do we build an accredited DT model (from IMFe standards)?
- IceNet is an existing system that needs retrofitting.
- How do we make them interoperable?
- Identity federation.
- How do we _not_ have to do the same project over and over again?
- Paying attention to technical debt in organisations.
- SSI: proposal about community-led practices (sent via email). ==DO NOT SHARE==
- Lots of simulation/emulator work across BAS; gordon blair (center for hydrology?) linked to IMFe, wapy? ice sheet model doing lots of emulation work
- Gordon Blair, [Defining the Digital Twin: Exploiting the Maximum Potential of the Technology](https://www.g7fsoi.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Session-2_Gordon-Blair.pdf)
## Action points
- [ ] ~~James~~ Scott: Can you share the IceNet proposal? Or direct us to someone who has access to/can share it?
- [ ] Kalle + Sophie: Can we think of ways to build Turing Way/TRIC-DT involvement in [Software in Polar Science 2024](https://software-in-polar-science.github.io/)?
