# Heroes for Hire Retrospectives 2023 ###### tags: `retrospective` ## July 31 - August 4, 2023 ## July 24 - July 28, 2023 https://app.funretrospectives.com/agendas/-NaC6gPzGxGhn_5XIXae#mainCourse ## July 17 - July 21, 2023 - https://app.funretrospectives.com/agendas/-N_ZbSNeGuTSgV9U2-tq#mainCourse ## July 10, 14, 2023 ### The Good (things that went well, and we should repeat, do more of it) **Jill** - Feeling like I'm finding more of a groove in working with 2-3 OKRs actively **Wade** - QA's MySQL upgrade when very smoothly. Anticipating similar uneventful upgrade for production. - Getting through the gems we needed to upgrade for Ruby 3 **Drew** - Productive Week, Started own mini-project along with picking up a bug that in the end will teach me a lot how emails and mailpit work. - Sinsense Migration is complete, that is just good stuff **Jillian** - Had another high velocity week. Would be nice to see us hang out around the 40s and create some consistency with our velocity and throughput **Brandon** - A very effecient week with no major issues is a win for me. **Carlos** - Getting power-tools up to speed and with green builds ### The Bad (things that should have never happened, and we must get rid of it) **Carlos** - The bug in Runway comments for iOS, fixed but still bad - The annoying issue with review item jobs failing ### The Ugly (things that did not go so well, and we should look for improvements, turning it into something beautiful) **Moretti** - I'm working on a task that takes a lot of time to get feedback on changes (webpack and vite compilation), which is slowing me down a lot. I can't think of anything we can do right now to make things easier for me, but it's a good reminder that any second of developer waiting we can remove is a win. **Wade** - A team this week ran into that issue where we need to rebalance their Runway items. Would be nice to find a way to automate this but realize it's not really a priority over Audiences at the moment. **Carlos** - We've stopped doing Renovate Bot meetings, should we go back to it? I like that SHIELD does it every monday after standup and that it is in their calendar ### What was Learned **Drew** - Learned about Cypress Mounting and how we are using it to test grid options in Home tour. Docs: https://docs.cypress.io/guides/component-testing/react/examples **Jill** - the solution to the ruby 3 deprecation warning conundrum was right in front of me the entire time 🙃 **Wade** - `let` can use `super` to build on previously defined `let`'s. See [this post](https://dev.to/povilasjurcys/deep-dive-into-rspecs-let-helper-4gkk). Although this feels like it'd be very messy and confusing so I'm not sharing it in Learn Something New. **Carlos** - Please don't use super on let or Terry will show up by your doorstep (I might as well) - I learned that rails 6 and 6.1 are not compatible with ruby 3.2 and that it's pretty annoying - Watched a good amount of Rails/RubyConf 2022 and loved the content ### Upcoming PTO **Wade**: Aug 22-30 **Carlos**: Sep 13-19 --- ## July 5 - 7, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Jasper and Nida's multi-select kit is finally ready to go if it's not already merged. - Nice to have Jill back from vacation! **Jillian** - nice short week. Was productive and saw Guilherme shipped multiple stories!! **Drew** - Short Week, got some things done, Great Pairing session with Carlos. **Jon** - I was able to hold my own this week - Testing was pretty seamless and no major issues came up (so far) - Still a productive week despite it being a short week **Gurban** - Very short 2-day weeks for me, not much to add. **Jill** - Felt pretty proud about getting back into the swing of things. **Carlos** - Good short week, not very productive though - Getting acquinted and comfortable with nitro-id ### What can improve? **Wade** - Tucker's health? Hope he's okay Jillian! **Jillian** - UGH Tucker. He managed to give himself an infection from licking a hot spot so he is on antibiotics, has a cone, and will go back for another checkup in 10 days. My anxiety is starting to level out now lol **Drew** - Everyone at the BBQ I was at for 4th is sick, two of then catching Covid, and Dad is back in the hospital. At this point, I feel like I am waiting for a time bomb to go off. Comit Overcommit just didn't work for a PR? Still don't know why ### What is important? **Jillian** - Seeing Thomas Rhett tonight! He is the first country artist I ever listened to that made me fall in love with country music. (Mike got major points for this Christmas present) **Drew** - Not Taking things for Granted. **Jon** - not waiting until last minute to finish packing - getting plenty of sleep before a trip **Jill** - taking more time off. #sorrynotsorry ### What was learned this Sprint? **Wade** - Terry showed me that a Resque Scheduled job with a schedule of `never: "* * * * *"` is a way to add a job to the schedule that isn't automated in any environment. It can only be manually triggered. **Jill** - I learned a bit about Rails' load_seed method and would like to dive deeper as we explore seeding for dev data. ## June 19 - June 30, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Carlos shipping a ton of stories. - We're in a good place with our Ruby 3 upgrade path - Q3 OKRs in a good place **Jillian** - Kudos to Carlos for all the work you shipped this week - Happy to see Moretti getting back into the swing of things. Give yourself time! - Glad we went over Q3 OKRs. Seems like everyone is confident in what we agreed upon **Jon** - Shoutout to carlos for shipping a lot of stories! - Great pairing sessions this week - We were able to quickly identify the bug in runway and figure out the best method to get a fix out **Moretti** - Happy to be back <3 - Glad to see the team very supportive regarding my problems with the story I'm working on. Thank you! - Excited about Q3 OKRs **Carlos** - Welcome Gal, welcome back Moretti - Good end for Q2 - Solid plan for Audience - Excieted for Q3 ### What can improve? **Wade** - Updating retro notes routinely? - Jillian: Yea I will get back into the habit of sending them out weekly. However, to the team if I get busy and don't post you guys know the link so feel free to update and send out. **Moretti** - Trying to figure out my new routine. They say it gets a lot better after the third month. **Gurban** - Had issues with my local enviroment, was not able to properly test my story locally and on ipad. hopefully Jon can show me the process and it works locally. ### What is important? **Wade** - I'll be taking some PTO Aug 22 - 30th. In PA, but only a day in Philly before visiting my wife's family in the Poconos. **Jon** - reminder to the team that i will be on PTO from 7/10-14th ## June 5 - June 16, 2023 ### What went well? **Drew** - Q2 Org Level OKR in the books with next step already in progress. - Guilherme back soon - Able to figure out "Bug Source" **Jill** - Done with all of our OrgLevel OKRs. How are we with the others? - the shape of DataTaster is getting better, and I'm really happy with the direction it's going - Welcome back to Moretti <3 **Brandon** - Not a huge week points wise but I think it was still pretty productive. - We were able to figure out the long standing bug that Nova had sent us. - We were also able to complete testing for the aasm stories which were fairly large. **Jillian** - Happy to see OKRs getting done! - Shoutout to Brandon and Jon for helping test some important SHIELD stories **Wade** - Thrilled to get through the aasm gem upgrade. Happy the transition was really smooth. - Had some fun assisting Jasper with the multi-select playbook kit for org levels. - Happy that ActiveStorage migration code is operational and ready for DocumentSignature migrations. **Gurban** - Finally, all done with the ActiveJob migrations - Welcome back Guilherme - Good to start picking up NCT stories - Good to have diversion from what I have been working on and pickup an active storage story ### What can improve? **Drew** - Internet Service/Connections **Jill** - Testing DataTaster stuff is so painful. Worse if things like maintenance or unrelated dump failures happen. **Brandon** - We had to revert a story (HFH-1440) which I feel like hasn't happened in awhile. We didn't have a full understanding of what we needed to test. I think we did a good job of acting quickly to figure out what the issue was. **Jillian** - How can we prepare better for this in the future? Not just to Brandon, but to the team. When we have a story we are unsure about testing what would be the best decisions to make? Meet with Kraig? **Wade** - I broke data dumps for a few days since I wasn't aware that dumps run in the context of a `development` environment so it was _thinking_ it was running locally rather than for a non-development environment. Thanks to Ryan for helping identify the root cause. - Had a few migrations in the past few weeks which blocked replication long enough to trigger Flow Control PagerDuty alerts. One was from Carlos mid-day. The other from an overnight merge from Terry. Hightened our awareness and causing us to plan accordingly for Carlos' next PR that could have similar issues. **Gurban** - Story had to be reverted (1440) ### What is important? **Drew** - Spending Time with Family and enjoying the weather **Jill** - 3 more working days until I leave for Portugal (Friday, Tuesday, Wednesday) **Brandon** - I'll be on vacation June 30th to July 7th. **Jillian** - I'll be in Lake Lure, North Carolina all of next week. **Gurban** - I will take 6/29, 6/30 off for Eid ## May 22 - Jun 2, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Last month of the quarter. I think things are going pretty well overall. - Percona Live was a really good show. Learned a lot more about cluster-to-cluster replication and using the Percona Operator. - Build notifications going to multiple places rather than one. **DREW** - Learned alot about Org Levels. Getting in the grove of HFH, and starting getting some momentum getting stories in. - Pairing with Members of the Team, learning a lot from everyone - Shout outs to Jill & Brandon for taking time and showing me alot. **Jon** - Paired with colin from playbook, brandon and i have a much better understanding of the expected workload that will come from them in the coming weeks/months - Kept my timeboxes short when testing **Jillian** - Much better job of documenting our efforts in tickets - Extra column seems to be beneficial for organization of both active sprint board and Flight Control page - Great conversation with First Contact and getting on the same page. Sometimes just talking a situation through face to face can be very beneficial (even if the problem ends up being less of an issue than we originally thought) - Carlos with all of the Runway extraction work. Cool to see you venture off with Ben K and really on this work. Also like that you are setting boundaries instead of taking on every issue someone might find knowing it doesn't align with the business priorities for the time being **Jill** - Another productive week. Feeling much better about OKRs. - We consolidated the Connect rooms and helped cut down on distracting noise. Also I love the fact that the developers have a dedicated room just for questions and chat....I feel like it'll go a long way in fostering a culture of learning and collaboration. **Brandon** - Productive week overall!! - Good pairing with Colin to get an understanding of testing for playbook in nitro. - Shout out to Drew for jumping on stories (including my bug). Glad to have him on the team! **Carlos** - Feel good about OKR's - New rooms are better, and Dev Discuss feels more useful now - Loved the new column in runway, very useful and make information a lot more clear **Gurban** - Started with NCT stories - Good progress team in spite of short week ### What can improve? **Drew** - Personal: Nitro Search & Debugging Literacy **Jillian** - Continuing to document our work. If you are trying to solve something because you might not know the best solution yet...add in a Spike. **Jill** - I feel really torn when we don't have Ben and Wade to use as a crutch. **Jon** - Making better use of my previous developer knowledge to dive into the code and understand what these files are doing so i can quickly figure out what's going on in the stories that im testing. (The AC basically does this already, but im only saying this for instances where the AC doesn't paint a complete picture with the story) **Brandon** - Nothing this time around. **Carlos** - Communication with business is improving, and I'm getting better direction on what can be done and what can't with Runway. Also undrstanding more who to look for to ask that. **Gurban** - It takes a day or two for me to get back into my previous pace after long weekend breaks ### What is important? **Wade** - Creators meeting update. **Drew** - Health and taking care of Mental and Physical. **Jill** - I leave for Portugal in three weeks and will need to have my OKRs in order by then. Also I leave for Portugal in three weeks!!! **Jon** - Taking care of your health **Carlos** - Wade's announcement about creators ## May 6 - 19, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Last week, was a gargantuan week for points for us. I don't recall an 80 point week ever for us. - Steady progress on the AASM upgrade. Feels great to be getting rid of our ancient, hacky, customizations. - Gal's birth. I assume no complications. **Jillian** - Gal's birth! - Figuring out a plan of taking over Guilherme's work, or putting it back in progress (thank you Gabriel for the one story) - Wade's progress through AASM. I think this is a big contributor to points sine you typically don't work on a bunch of stories in a Sprint **Jill** - Congrats to the Moretti family <3 she's so adorable - Lots of cross-team collab **Drew** - Monster week for points. Kaiju Sized Point Total - Org Levels, View Components, Broken Record. Learning and Learning, and shout out to Wade, Jill, and Carlos for taking time out to teach. Also to Ninja's for helping me track down and learn more about how parts of Nitro work. - Baby Morretti has finally arrived. **Brandon** - Efficient week of testing again. Even though we didn't have as many points as last week I feel like we got a lot done. - Congrats to Moretti and his family on the baby!! - Another shout out to Jon. He's continuing to do a great job with testing. He's jumping on stories that he doesn't neccissarily know how to test. He's learning to figure out processes using the knowldge hes already gained and also asking the right question. He's depending on me less and less. I'm so proud 🥲. **Carlos** - Gal's Premiere in the world - Lot's of delivery - Big changes to runway, faster flight control - More changes to come to runway **Gurban** - Big two weeks - Welcome baby Gal - Almost there with activejob migration, one more to go - Improved activejob statuses page - workingout lately - Kudos to Brandon and Jon, lots of things in review ### What can improve? **Wade** - Outside of just repetitively asking, how can we promote/encourage teams to help towards big endeavors. Like ViteJS, Ruby 3 deprecations, etc. **Jillian** - Meetings are not optional. We need to be coming to standups and retros especially on time. These are very important and you should want to be on time in order to contribute to the team. There is an alarm set on the calendar so losing track of time can notbe a legitimate excuse. I do not like being put in a place where I have to be firm, but we continiously fall into this bad habit every 2-3 months. Sickness and along those lines are obviously excusable, but just not showing up is unexcusable. - We have to be putting tickets in for our work. If someone were to ask me outside of the team "what is so and so working on" and you have no tickets, but you have been doing a ton of work it isn't a great representation for yourself. DOing the work is important, but tracking it is just as important if not more. This contributes to how we are even testing those PRs, not confusing me and others during standups, and the teams' velocity. This isn't just one person I have spoken with multiple people on the team. Again, this is the best way to represent the work that you do so don't sell yourself short. (that goes for Spikes as well. If you are researching or trying to answer a question in order to code that is a Spike) For example, Carlos and I had a great conversation about this considering he does a ton of work on the team. This is a great way to show how much effort you contribute day to day. - Staying focused on OKRs. I notice a lot of the time people are getting pulled outside of the team or doing work that might be important, but it can really be pushed off. Please keep your OKRs as a priority. This is the only way we will be able to reach them. **Jill** - OrgLevels is progressing, but it's become a much larger project than anticipated. I've been working to ensure we're in step with the playbook and nova teams, but sometimes wires got crossed. The fact that the new multi-level select kit isn't really integrated into forms caused a lot of extra work and some not-great patterns, and I don't really consider the rails version usuable in its current state. I know and appreciate that the playbook team turned this around quickly and has been really responsive. I also appreciate Nova's willingness to work with us to create sustainable standards for this new pattern. **Drew** - Staying in the habit on good update/E.O.D. notes. **Brandon** - My sleep patterns. **Carlos** - Product level decisions in Runway are challenging, but I'm dealing with it - Now that Brandon mentioned, my sleep patterns aren't the best either - Put all cards on the board **Gurban** - Next week will pickup where Moretti left - Don't be late to the meetings or miss ### What is important? **Wade** - I'm out next week at Percona Live Mon-Thu, then PTO on Friday. **jillian** - Don't forget May 29 we have off for Memorial weekend (monday). Really just a reminder for Carlos if you want to go on PTO that day or work by yourself ! **Drew** - Baby Morretti is here which means no Guilherme for a bit, Need to keep learning and asking questions. Also Summer is in. Sooner PTO is put in the better. **Jill** - s/o to Drew for helping out with OrgLevel stuff ## April 21 - May 5, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Was great seeing most of the team in person again during Create. - I seem to have helped the SRE's clarify a lot of stuff about expectations for the Phoenix data center. - CandidateCall recording code changes took much less time than I thought. - Syncing up with Drew to review ActiveStorage and other areas he's likely not overly familiar with. **Jillian** - I like that Brandon, Jon and I came up with an alternate game plan instead of the extra column (until I get word from Jenny what she wants to do). It is important we keep things uniform across all teams, hence why it isn't a simple "yes go ahead", becuase it would be a change for all the teams in the department . That being said, they will add a green checkmark on stories that are good to ship, and put those stories at the top of the review column. **Drew** - Create was great. Working with everyone in person is always awesome. - Playing Jill's Squirrel Tower Defense Game was great way to wrap up working session - Learning all the time. Learned about new tool(Might be useful ofr ninja's), and learning new things about code feels like on the daily. **Moretti** - ViteJS going forward. We already managed to migrate some components - Being able to help Gurban on ActiveJob migration a little bit **Jon** - create was great, had an awesome time working in person with everyone again - learning a lot the more i test out different pages in nitro. - communications with different teams to get their input/help has been great as well. **Gurban** - Almost there with activejob stories - Got back into regular tempo after Ramadan - Call recordings active storage taken care of by Wade. **Brandon** - Always great getting together with the team. - Glad that a process change for runway is getting consideration. Hopefully it's something that can be helpful to all of the teams. - Moretti's baby!!! **Carlos** - Create was great, and it's always a pleasure working shoulder-to-shoulder with y'all - I like the idea of a new column ### What can improve? **Wade** - Staying focused on OKRs. We get a lot of stuff flying our way. Some of it is important/urgent, some just important, but not that urgent. We need to take a breath and weigh if something's urgent enough to interrupt our objectives. **Drew** - Note taking. Slacked on my story notes over the last two weeks. Need to make better notes for myself and other's to track story progress or even lack there of due to blockers. **Moretti** - Too much distractions on these last weeks, I feel that I failed to communicate well with team - Commit to a story regarding OrgLevels but I had to leave that back on Queue again. I underestimated the pending work on ViteJS **Jon** - reach out sooner when im having trouble finding pages. I let time get away from me. **Carlos** - Stay focused on our OKRs. I got caught up on a runway bug that took most of my last week, which is valid, but it was a 3yo bug. **Brandon** - Nothing for the last couple of weeks. **Gurban** - Now I am thinking of it, I should have attended Create even if it's for just a day. ### What is important? **Wade** - Guilherme's baby arriving any day now! - Garett is out on PTO the next two weeks. May get more involvement with his teams than normal. - I'll be out Mon-Fri 5/22-26 mostly at Percona Live (Denver) but also a day of PTO (wife's bday) **Drew** - +1 to Gulherme's New baby. My bet is 5/9. - Taking care of oneself. After getting home from GA, felt the constant non-stop running around. TCOY(Take Care Of Yourself). **Moretti** - Yes, the baby, I'm pretty anxious. When she arrives I'll take the parental leave + vacations (need to confirm exactly how much days this will be) **Gurban** - I pray baby arrives safe and sound. Happy for you Moretti. Next is ours :) **Jon** - celebrating cinco de mayo! **Carlos** - Excited for Gal's debut! Here's a song I like from Gal Costa (inspirer of her name): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgQyac-QOJ0 --- ## March 24 - April 7, 2023 ### What went well? **Jillian** - We shipped a ton last Sprint, both throughput and velocity increased **Brandon** - We got a lot of stories across the line the past 2 weeks. - Almost done with Turbo. - I think the team overall is working very efficiently. **Wade** - If Turbo ships today, then it went really well. - Excited about the super fast asset compilation Diego showed me with the esbuild/vitejs stuff. **Carlos** - Tons shipped - Org Level stuff made it to the end of the quarter, kudos - Runway is at the state we anticipated - faster yarn hmr **Drew** - Actually got a response and two possible solutions to the blocker for one of the blocked stories for Sisense Prod Migration - Also close to completing prep for Migration for when we get through blockers - Neha back, can focus on HFH soon **Jon** - Got my hands dirty on some new parts of nitro that i've never seen before - A lot of stories merged - communication between the team is great as i've been able to get quick answers. **Gurban** - Great petformance, lots of work done by team - Turbo is ready to be merged - Most resque migration jobs code complete, except for about 13 jobs that involves status plugin - Kudos to Brandon/Jon. Lots of testing - Yarn builds fast, especially helpful when working on frontend and multiple stories as I switch back and forth. ### What can improve? **Wade** - Having Ruby 2 get EOL came at a decent time as we switched over to Q2 OKRs, but in general we should see about setting up OKRs with some padding maybe in order to absorb stuff like that which can occur unexpectedly **during** a quarter. **Drew** - Sisense Docs - My overall knowledge of plain JS **Jon** - Not prematurely rushing into testing a story especially if it's not ready. - Need to learn/understand when the existing data in review environments may cause testing issues. Everythings been fine until recently **Gurban** - Better sleep schedule. This Ramadan feels a bit different, a bit lower on the energy side. Might effect performance, so bear with me, please. **Carlos** - Bugs shipped in runway - Flaky specs in runway - Rails 6.0 is also coming to its EOL in June ### What is important? **Brandon** - I'm out on PTO April 7th and 10th **Wade** - I guess that means Jon needs to step up! **Drew** - Not let fustrations get to me, and to make sure I keep a good mental state. **Jon** - Keeping my tabs organized, shoutout to brandon for showing me the container extension. It's saved me so much time when having to impersonate multiple people **Gurban** - Plan to take 21st/Friday off for Eid. **Jillian** - Team is excited to meet the baby! --- ## March 10 - March 24, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Getting together in person and especially meeting Guilherme since there likely won't be another opportunity for the remainder of the year. - Food. Everything we made on our own or went out to eat was all fantastic. - Getting close with cutting Runway's ties with CoreModels and NitroTheme. **Carlos** - Food, Guilherme, getting together, and a whole great week. Miss y'all! - All the work we're doing on Runway, all the complexity we're removing and everything we're cleaning up. - The project kickoff meeting helped on knowing what to work next. **Gurban** - It was great getting together, everything went really well. Thank you team and Power/BT for making it possible. - Extracting nitro history was a great experience, thank you Carlos. - Yes, it's `camel_trail` **Drew** - Working in person with everyone was great. Awesome to get to know everyone better. Really looking forward to being HFH full time. - Got a lot of good tips and incite from everyone. Thanks to everyone for answering my questions and lending me your tips and perspectives. - Getting full exposure on what being on a platform team/HFH is like. **Brandon** - It was great getting everyone together in person as always. - Great to meet Moretti - Feel like the week working on APM went really well. - Shout out Jon!! He's really doing a great job picking up testing and working with the team. It's been great working with him. - The Food!! **Moretti** - Amazing week! I was glad to meet everyone, know Philly, and watch a Unions match. - Learning more about apm/Runway and see all team working on same objective was very cool! **Jon** - Great meeting everyone, enjoyed spending the week with yall and getting to understand the teams workflow a bit more - Shoutout to the team for being helpful whenever i had questions on their PR's - Shoutout to brandon for being a great teacher! ### What can improve? **Wade** - On our team, I'm not sure, but I wish our company could get us plane tickets to events more than a week prior to the event. **Gurban** - Looking forward to merging Turbo upgrade. **Drew** -My involvment with the team. Need to learn all the various aspects that this team covers so I can make sure to contribute all that I can. **Moretti** - Some leftover stories from Runway migration still in progress yet - The week after our week in Phily I couldn't work on org_level stories which were our primary quarter goals **Jon** - had a minor oopsie daisy by prematurely testing playbooks' story. I just have to double check their story cards and make sure i'm testing alpha releases when prompted ### What is important? **Wade**: April is Create! **Gurban**: It's Ramadan. I will miss create. **Drew**: April means new quarter and create. New goals and new work ahead. --- ## February 25 - March 10, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Switching dev dumps to an allow list approach. Excited to see where we go from here. - Super excited to meet up in person with everyone next week. **Jill** - APM Sprint Week is upon us. We had such a productive discussion/preparation for this, and I'm excited to see what we accomplish, and excited to see everyone. - Wade had a fantastic response to the issues around the dev dumps, I was working hard to follow up and make sure everyone was aware and active and he was often one step ahead of me on that. **Drew** - Progress with Sisense, had a good meeting and seems like we have a good line to explore from both ends to get by a blocker for ORA-96. - Good pairing sessions and Rubber ducks sessions throughout the week. **Jon** - Great week testing different parts of nitro. - Understanding of the application and most processes have improved thanks to brandons guidance **Carlos** - I'm happy with the overall performance of the team, and very excited for the upcoming work - Doesn't seem much, but I'm happy with the cleanup on the LOAD_PATH - I'm excited about the future of the database dump tool, and happy we got the allowlist out **Moretti** - I made a promise to myself and almost filled it, we are in the brinks to be able upgrade React to v17 - Looking forward to meeting everyone in person (I didn't meet even Carlos that lives in the same city as mine, which is a shame) and mess with some Ruby code next week **Brandon** - Great week of testing overall. - Glad to have Jon around to help out. He's diving in and picking up on testing well. ### What can improve? **Wade** - The Turbo stories are lingering. Anything there problematic? Or that's teaching us anything? - With the dev dump issues yesterday I feel the core issue there was me not being clear in some communication around that effort. I feel it was also on me to have caught that on the PR before it was merged. If there's something that could be improved it's probably around me being focused. **Jill** - I feel good about making the dumps better and the fact that people are looking at them and understanding better how they worked, but bad that there was this big thing that I missed. I made myself a huge list of things to check and went through the list, but it didn't turn out to be enough. That story was originally introduced as a one-pointer, but that's not representative of the work / effort / complexity around the dumps. I'm looking forward to hopefully making this part of our Q2 OKRs so we can devote the necessary time / attention to this and get things working more smoothly....potentially with clear goals in mind for speed, etc. I did add notes to help us for the next time. **Drew** - Feels like a broken record but more understanding of how Sisense works and is structured. This will allow quicker ability to find resolutions. **Jon** - speeding up overall testing and recognizing when things are incorrect. **Gurban** - Turbolinks upgrade taking a lot longer than expected or planned. Mainly because we are touching over 300 files, it takes long to go thru them and its more testing time both in development and review. since we had to revert twice before, i think we should check check it thoroughly this time. - Other issue is that, even tho we have the PR for the actual upgrade ready, we can't move forward with it without merging the preparation PR. ### What is important? **Wade**: At least me and Carlos are at Houston Leadership the week after next. Anyone else going? **Jill**: Also going to Houston Leadership. **Drew**: Will not be at leadership, but feel like everyone already knew that. Also looking forward to and being ready for next week and seeing everyone. **Jon**: keeping up a good pace with testing larger stories **Carlos**: learn where we missed on the database dump stories and how we could be better, perhaps a good discussion for Philly. **Moretti**: Should we prep for React upgrade this week, or since we are focusing on APM Sprint it's better to leave that for next week (March 20th)? ## February 10 - February 24, 2023 ### What went well? **Jill** - rspec standards got shipped, let's have a party now. **Drew** - Got 1st HFH story to review. - Everyone has been Beyond welcoming. **Moretti** - Welcome Drew! - Got my VISA! - RSpec documentation! - Paloalto VPN is so much better, now I can git push connected in VPN **Brandon** - Welcome Drew!! - Had a good time working with Jon this week. He's excited to be in the roll and picking things up quickly. ### What can improve? **Jill** - we are apparently running behind the company's needs on the org_level stuff, and I feel bad pulling Carlos away from his focus. However, we have important and highly valuable discussions and came up with viable compromises that helped keep multiple teams running in the same direction (overall a +/-) **Drew** - (Personal) Need to better monitor my programs I use for work. Still not sure what caused them to do what they did at the beginning of the week but took time that would have been better spent Support HFH & Oracle. **Moretti** - I'm not that confident that we will be able to upgrade React this quarter yet, the replacement for react-select is much more complex than I anticipated - Maybe I can give a break on the React upgrade to help the team on org_level epic? **Brandon** - Had to revert HFH-1100 which is dissapointing, but it's a large story that touches almost every thing in nitro. I'm happy we didn't break anything too bad. ### What is important? **Jill** - thanks to Carlos and Brandon for helping me get shit done this week <3 - y'all are great, have a great weekend, our APM week is going to be great! **Drew** - Power's support network within BT is awesome. Got help when needed from both within and outside the team this week. Makes the entire department strong. **Brandon** - I hope Wade brought his sunscreen with him. --- ## January 28 - February 10, 2023 ### What went well? **Wade** - Is this our biggest points in a week ever? - Guilherme got his visa! - Zeitwerk effort seems to be going **much** faster than I'd anticipated. - Drew will be joining and will initially be able to help get through our ActiveJob stories. **Gurban** - Welcome Drew! - Guilherme got visa. - Lots of points. **Brandon** - Ton of points!! Great job everyone! - Welcome Drew! **Jillian** - yes, this was our biggest Sprint. Better yet, it was a more consistent flow from in progress, review, to Done. Goes to show the milano tag process is working - Congrats on the Visa Guilherme! - Welcoming Drew to the team - ElasticSearch went well **Jill** - Congrats Moretti! - Welcome to Drew! - First permissions org_level story shipped - Ruby 3 DepError made it to prod and didn't cause outage - s/o to brandon for taking to the change - Rspec Standards are getting close - Carlos wrote a great Zeitwerk L&L - Our ES rollout! **Carlos** - Welcome Drew! - Really excited to enable Zeitwerk - Morettis Visa's - Congrats Jill for the Rspec standards, Ruby 3 deprecations, and first Org Level permissions - ~~Elsatic Search~~ ### What can improve? **Wade** - We need to review our Queued column and Backlog soon. I cleared out some Rails 5-6 related stuff, but there's probably more we can clear. **Gurban** - Looking forward to merging the turbolinks story. **Jill** - Can we talk about how to manage the R3 dep errors? ### Anything important? **Wade** - PTO Feb 21-Mar 1 - With Drew joining, he'll need some training around other stuff we do. **Brandon** - I took PTO on Monday the 13th. I put in on the calender last week but forgot to mention it (Sorry!!). **Jillian** - PTO on Monday 2/13 **Jill** - PTO 2/24 **Carlos** - PTO 2/20, 2/21 ## January 13, January 27, 2023 ### What went well? **Jill** - Despite the fact that we have so much going on and a lot of commitments, we seem to be moving through them nicely. - The rspec doc. It's looking pretty good. It was really really difficult for me to write. - RUNWAY PARTY **Wade** - After Wed/Thu, I'll be relying on everyone else to tell me what went well. - Oh, right, we're getting together the week of Mar 13th! **Moretti** - Looking forward to getting my VISA and being able to join the team at Runway Party week **Brandon** - Another efficient week getting stories across the board even with the MySql issues. **Gurban** - Another solid week. - Excited to meet everyone again! - On track with active jobs **Carlos** - I'm happy the rspec doc is out (reviewing it) - Zeitwerk is getting to a good point - Had an interesting conversation with Jenny last week about the JS stuff - Team meeting has a date! ### What can improve? **Jill** - Damn it, Oracle. (Don't send Ben or Carlos to Texas) - This week was definitely a week in which I felt The Weight of the Monolith 🏋️🏋️🏋️🏋️🏋️🏋️ - Milano envs -- what's the actual workflow here? - After discussing, the process will be: - developers shouldn't have more than 3 stories with a Milano tag on IN REVIEW. - Keep in communication with Brandon in regards to when you are ready to move a ticket to Review and if he has the capacity to test it right away. - Once your ticket moves into Review after Brandon's approval, you can add the Milano tag to your ticket. **Wade** - Oracle/MySQL thing Jill mentioned. - Unbreakable sent us some stories about sessions. We'll have to start expecting stuff like this and see how we can integrate these into our workflow. These aren't urgent stories, but they are outside of OKRs but still need to get done within some kind of reasonable timeframe. **Moretti** - I wish I could help with all the incidents that happened this week, I felt a little lost if I could do something or not. However, the messages in the announcements channel were clear on what was going on. Maybe next time join as a listener on Sysops zoom? - systemoperations zoom - There's no notification of new messages on channels, sometimes I miss some discussions because I was not paying attention to our channel or Connect in general. **Brandon** - Hopefully giving the ninja's the abliity to deploy to milano is realistic in the near future. This would eliminate the problems we had with having to many PR's open and prevent Langfeld from yelling at us. **Gurban** - I hope we can find a good process for milano tags that works well for us **Carlos** - The MySQL/Oracle issue: packages cache (APT, NPM, RubyGems) - The milano process is a bit crazy right now ### Anything important? **Jill** - Thanks to Ben, Wade, Carlos, and many others who fixed the shit. **Wade** - I have PTO schedule Feb 21-Mar 1. This coincides with Ben Langfeld attending PAG. ## January 2, January 13, 2023 ### What went well? **Jillian** - Hello points. 45?? Awesome job this week - Everyone seems to be in their own swimlanes and knows what the priorities are for themselves (if you don't then talk to Wade) **Moretti** - Thanks to Wade for bringing us a summary of the meeting with the CEO, looking forward to the OKR meeting on Monday - Good pairing sessions with Gabriel, I think it will save us a lot of time on rewriting the components. **Carlos** - Good start of the year, everyone finding ways to contribute while we work on our OKR's - Looking forward for our OKR meeting on monday - Excited for the year with a lot of work on HFH **Gurban** - Although I couldn’t contribute to the points, team did great work. - OKR meeting should be good guidance for the us for the year **Brandon** - Really efficient week overall. Great job team!! - Breaking up the zeitwerk stuff was really beneficial. It's made testing much easier. I'm glad Carlos and I got to work together on that. **Jill** - Got so many tasks done this week, felt very productive. - Had an opportunity to have great conversations with Wade - +100 about the overview he gave us, I really value the transparency there **Wade** - Really valued the time Corey gave us and sharing it with the team. Tim and Corey both appreciate being as open as they can. - Spending time with folks at HQ and chatting with devs I don't typically encounter week to week. - The shipped stories last week was mentioned and truly impressive last week. ### What can improve? **Jillian** - Not necessarily an improvement, but discussing our OKRs and making sure everyone understands what their priorities are this quarter all the way down to each Sprint. - Please be a minute early to standups so we can start on time - Hard when we rely on other teams (example for react upgrade) , but also a positive having teams do their part of it and not have it all on us. - The queued column is getting too congested again. The point of that column is to have OKRs and whatever you will work on THAT SPRINT. Please put everything else in the backlog. If you want me too add sections with your name on it in the back I will, but please note it will be your responsibility to move your work under your name. **Carlos** - We depend a lot from business to decide our future, but I'd like to have OKR's for next quarter decided on the previous quarter, whenever that's possible - I'd like railroads removed from Gurban's path **:-D** I'm glad it's all good! **Gurban** - Not very productive weeks for me personally after long breaks. - Got into an accident. Thankfully, no harm to myself. Took care of the car issues. - CI kept failing, but now seems to have resolved. - This was a 2.5-day short week for me. **Jill** - dependabot. We keep forgetting to go over them. Usually there's nothing to talk about there and I just merge the PR, but it's worth keeping a part of our process. **Wade** - Airports? Seems like they're having a tough time of it recently. ### Anything important? **Jill** - I am finalizing the details for a trip to Portugal and I'm so excited. - Even if it's not in March, I would love to set up a thing where we work in person. **Wade** - I'm trying to plan a vacation for late February/early March timeline so if we do plan a team gathering to focus on extracting Runway, I'd like to nail down some dates. And I'd like everyone to be present.
