Gyökeres: Accepting the Fact I’m Not a “Perfect Striker”
Recently, in an interview with The Athletic, Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres responded to his recent form, saying he accepts that he is not a “perfect striker,” but hopes to continue contributing to the team through goals.

The Sun columnist Wyett noted that the Swedish forward has had to develop a thick skin to deal with outside criticism since returning to English football. Last December, England legend Gary Lineker pointed out that Gyökeres can be too passive with his movement in the penalty area, often waiting for the ball to come to him rather than making proactive runs.
Responding to such comments, Gyökeres said calmly: “There’s always room for improvement. I’m not a perfect player. As a striker, your job is to score goals, and I want to keep contributing to the team.”
Gyökeres has been in fine form recently. Coming off the bench against Sunderland, he scored twice, taking his tally to six goals in eight matches in 2026. His strong run of form comes as Arsenal close in on the Premier League title.
Reflecting on his adaptation to the Premier League, Gyökeres said: “When life changes, you have to adapt as quickly as possible. It’s a challenge. I just keep doing the right things and stay confident.” He also stressed the importance of mentality: “Even if it’s just psychological, it’s the most important thing.”
Statistics show that Gyökeres has scored 13 goals in his first 32 appearances for Arsenal, comparable to the early numbers posted by Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, highlighting his potential to become a key attacking figure for the club.
Arsenal have been in excellent form recently, beating Sunderland and Chelsea and booking their place in the League Cup final. Gyökeres added: “Both matches were tough, but we were solid defensively and very effective going forward.”
