Official: Montgomery Appointed Head Coach of Beijing Guoan
Today, Beijing Guoan issued an official announcement, confirming Nick Montgomery as the club’s new head coach.

We are pleased to officially announce the appointment of Nick Montgomery as head coach of Beijing Guoan’s first team.

Born in 1981, Montgomery played nearly 400 matches for Sheffield United in the Premier League and Championship. He later joined Australia’s A-League side Central Coast Mariners, helping the team win its first-ever league title in the 2012–2013 season.

After retiring in 2017, Montgomery became a youth coach at Central Coast Mariners. In the 2021–2022 season, he was promoted to first-team head coach and won the A-League title in his second season, becoming the first person in club history to win a league title as both player and coach.
In the 2023–2024 season, Montgomery coached Scottish Premiership side Hibernian. From the 2024–2025 season, he joined Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff as assistant coach, working with Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, helping Spurs win the 2024–2025 UEFA Europa Conference League.
During his tenure at Central Coast Mariners, Montgomery boldly promoted youth players, building one of the league’s most dynamic teams and leading a squad that was initially underestimated to play highly attractive football, culminating in the 2022–2023 A-League title. His coaching ability has been widely praised.
Montgomery emphasizes timely high pressing and quick collective reactions after transitions, with strong control over match tempo. Known for his passion, his teams play an aggressive and proactive style. In team management, he values data-driven approaches, player fitness and recovery, and team culture development.
Montgomery will now lead his full coaching team at Beijing Guoan. Under his leadership, the club aims to bring renewed energy, stronger cohesion, and a more competitive performance to deliver exciting matches for Beijing fans in the new season.
