On being traded to Washington:
“Some people said I wasn’t enthusiastic about joining the Wizards, but I never said that. They welcomed me with open arms, and I spent some time with the team’s owner and front office. It’s completely different from what the media described.
I know there’s a perception that ‘they’re not a good team.’ I haven’t seen the training facility yet, but it’s definitely top-notch, world-class. I met the chef team and learned how they take care of players’ families. Everything has been great.”
On his future with the Wizards:
“I need to talk with them to understand the actual plans before making decisions. I had a brief chat with Will on Friday. Clearly, at this time of year, everyone wants to compete for a championship. That is obviously the main goal—getting to that position. There will be conversations about how to achieve it. I’ve been to many places in the past two years. I want to see the plan, hear the plan, understand the vision. Bringing Trae Young here and other moves—they’re thinking about what to do, and I want to have those conversations and see how it develops.
This city is obviously great—this is Washington, who wouldn’t like it?
The team is obviously in a tough spot right now, and the record shows that, but adding certain pieces can change things. It’s about year-to-year development, and next season they could absolutely be the top team in the East.”
On being traded again without prior notice:
“They don’t have to do that; it’s a courtesy, but they’re not obligated. Sometimes these things happen suddenly… players get traded in the middle of the night all the time—they don’t owe you that.
At this stage of my career, I want to compete for a championship, whether it’s here or elsewhere—I’m not sure yet. Everything they’ve said and shown me has been excellent. Right now, it’s about having real conversations about the team.”
