REG Kickoff Meeting

October 4, 2022

Proposed Agenda

  • Intro to REG (CRS/AH)
    • Research background without individual research agenda
    • Help make the research output open, reproducible
    • Not just here to wrap up code, interested in contributing to the research side
    • Way we Work: work well in sprints, Github (e.g. project board)
  • Project Context & Stakeholders (JD)
  • Intro to DyME-CHH (RB)
    • Intro to CLIM-RECAL (RB)
      • Question: calibrating against observational data now?
        • RB: Climate projections provide 30 years of back cast data, so you use the observed data against the back cast data. There's never going to be perfect results; there will be issues with whatever methodology you use. What we can do is compare them and offer in a useful way to researchers
        • FB: always distortions with cartography projections; about choosing the best one for your use case. Help researchers understand what distortion they are working with
      • Question: do you have a list of metrics to evaluate different performances?
        • RB: depending on the method you will evaluate in a different way; we will follow best practices in the literature
      • Question: what do you mean by different methods have pros/cons? Shouldn't one just be more accurate? Is it question-based: what's best for you at that time?
        • RB: some focus on better measure of precipitation or other climate variables. You can't really well assess how well a projection is done because it's in the future?
      • Question: this repo, do you have documentation as well as calibrated projections as well? Are the methods easily available?
        • RB: probably not because they are huge; The methods really varies (lots of literature) and in different languages which influences who uses it
      • Question: is one outcome to document/point/implement methods?
        • RB: we will be implementing them to UKCP18 data and have comparison of methods
        • FB: we will compare methods in a public way and link up test data/results so others can reproduce/test the methods
    • Intro to SPC (FB)
  • Ruth to send papers/slides/github repo (REG/RPM)
  • Send meeting invite
  • REG folks mostly in the office some days a week (Thursdays)
  • RPM: for the project plan, do we have objectives or milestones
