## October 31
We arrived first to the Chateau, in a car with Colborn, Gordon, Bea, and P. We chose to approach from the cinematic direction, with the Chateau rising over the gate as we climbed the driveway.
Fey has been refreshed with a Miami Vice aesthetic, full of soft pink couches and mirrored surfaces. I recorded some walkthroughs of the liminal spaces and imagined some of the ways they will change once the residents arrive and start adapting them to their projects.
P gave us a tour of the grounds. The recent Fey Arts event activated many spaces I remember as storage for machinery and furniture. They have been transformed into welcoming spaces filled with tables, carpets, bars, and remnants of art installations. During the tour I discovered many spaces I didn’t encounter on my three previous stays here. The rare fruits and veggies garden, the native plant labyrinth with lifeguard chair for safety, the indoor sports arena, the courtyard tower, and the cottage where I will be sharing a room with three other residents. I was also reintroduced to the Kugel auditorium and was happy to find it still standing strong, just with sun bleached webbing.
One resident was expected to arrive by priority air shipment. A Pepe the Frog doll exiled from America is permanently moving to France where public perception is more nuanced and less entangled with cultures of hate.
The human residents slowly arrived throughout the afternoon and got settled into their rooms. While we reunited with old friends and collaborators the new chefs, Dan and Harry, grilled a large carcass and play punk rock on the kitchen stereo.
Everyone seemed energized and eager to start brainstorming projects, hacks, and collaborations. We made many connections that seemed serendipitous but we’re probably just the result of highly effective curation.
Prior to dinner we started congregating in the costume parlor. Some brought their costumes from home. Many found an appropriate wig or cape in the costume box. Yan demonstrated his custom brainwave activated antennae.
Among the organizers and previous residents, we had a dispute about whether or not to introduce alcohol on the first evening. If we introduce alcohol we may have set the expectation that it would be available every night, but we wanted to make sure the residency emphasized productivity and collaboration over parties. If we serve alcohol with dinner it will not encourage people to get back to working and building for the late nights into early mornings. Ultimately we decided to serve sparkling wine to speed up assimilation of newcomers, celebrate our reunion for veterans, and then return to productivity.
While in Halloween costumes, during the happy hour we discussed ideas for bio hacking, fashion, metaverses, AI, and our intentions for the next 2 weeks, while enjoying our crémant de Bourgogne, colorful bruschetta, and lentil balls with chutney. There was no time for small talk, neither with the returning Glitch veterans or the newcomers. Within the first few moments of any conversation we were going down rabbit holes exploring each other’s craft and strategizing for collaboration. There was no question why we were all there.
Ooli and I sat down for dinner and both shared that we were disappointed that Teddy was not there yet. Teddy is our host & fellow resident of DAO Palace in July of this year. We decided to record him a voice message wishing he would arrive soon and as we were preparing to send he appeared in front of us. I have heard it is common to get exactly what you wish for at Fey.
As the night progressed we changed costumes and venues many times, finding new groups that were finding common passions and identifying potential projects. I learned that multiple groups had projects to show off around visualizing attribution and remixing of art & AI generated images in interactive ways. I was excited to see how this can integrate with the Creative Commons NFT projects that were spawned at Glitch 1 last year.
I caught up with Ruth on her work since Glitch last year and found a common passion for governance LARPs. We strategized how we might run some experimental LARPs with the residents over the next 2 weeks, and discussed the LARP led by Black Swan at DWeb camp this summer. I spent a lot of the rest of the night recruiting members and preparing them for what comes next.
At the end of the night, with our costumes falling apart and high expectations for the weeks ahead, we all went back to our rooms and got some rest.
