IOI maintains a dynamic [Zotero collection (bibliography) of works related to sustainable open infrastructure](https://www.zotero.org/groups/4377072/invest_in_open).
[Zotero](https://hackmd.io/@investinopen/tools-we-use#Zotero) is an open-source bibliographic citation management tool. It has a vibrant user and development community. :earth_americas:
## Getting started
To get started as an IOI contributor to Zotero, see [Zotero's extensive documention](https://www.zotero.org/support/start), including its Quick Start Guide (with details on local installation of software).
To join the IOI Zotero group, you need to have a Zotero account (register for a free account [at this link](https://www.zotero.org/user/register)). When you are logged into your Zotero account, go to the [IOI group page](https://www.zotero.org/groups/4377072/invest_in_open) and click "Join". Wait for a group admin to accept your request.
### Plugins
We recommend you use [Zotero plugins](https://www.zotero.org/support/plugins) to automate the creation and management of items in IOI's collection. Among the most useful plugins:
-- [Zotero Connector for Chrome](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/zotero-connector/ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc), an extension for saving citations from your web browser.
-- [Zutilo](https://github.com/wshanks/Zutilo) for tag management.
-- [Cita](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Zotero/Cita) facilitates integration of Zotero and Wikidata.
For a quick demonstration of how to add an IOI publication to IOI's Zotero collection using the Connector for Chrome plugin, see [this video](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cD2_2L74fcUs8FMSNeQpgs33imMXaelh/view?usp=drive_link) (internal access only).

## Checklist of IOI required elements
When you add a new citation to IOI's Zotero collection, please perform the following actions.
### Folders
:heavy_check_mark: Store each citation in a **topic folder**. Example: "[Community cultivation](https://www.zotero.org/groups/4377072/invest_in_open/collections/X3VTG9TI/items/97N8YDK6/item-list)" is stored in [IOI's Community subfolder](https://www.zotero.org/groups/4377072/invest_in_open/collections/X3VTG9TI).
### Tags
:heavy_check_mark: Tag each citation with the name of the topic folder. Example: "Community cultivation," stored in IOI's Community subfolder, has been assigned a "[community" tag](https://www.zotero.org/groups/4377072/invest_in_open/collections/X3VTG9TI/tags/community/collection).
:heavy_check_mark: Assign **additional tags** to each citation in order to make it easier to discover and retrieve in the future. Please use IOI's approved tags whenever possible: https://hackmd.io/@investinopen/tags. :round_pushpin:
### Capitalization
:heavy_check_mark: In the title field, capitalize the first letter of the title and subtitle. Use lowercase for other words in the title. Capitalize proper names. More info: [APA citation style](https://hackmd.io/@investinopen/standards#Citation-style).
### Abstracts
:heavy_check_mark: Please include an abstract whenever possible. Copy the abstract or summary written by the work's author or publisher.
### Notes
:heavy_check_mark: Please **write a brief sentence** or two explaining how each work relates to IOI's mission. See Zotero's [instructional documentation](https://www.zotero.org/support/notes) as well as [examples of notes in IOI's "Training" folder](https://www.zotero.org/groups/4377072/invest_in_open/collections/9X2QSFXR).
Aim to include in each note:
- Description of the work.
- Description of the work's importance to the topic.
- Any notable issues/concerns/strengths/deficiencies in the work.
- Context about the author(s) or the place the work has in the "canon" of literature.
