# Investment Elements Workshop

**Description:** What is Investment? Advancing the cause of open infrastructure can come in a variety of ways.

In this session, help us think through these key elements of investment - funding, resources, and organizational capacity - by exploring the following questions:

→ How should we define each element?

→ What is the value of each element in the overall investment "portfolio" we should be considering?

→ What are the dangers when they come into imbalance (excess or scarcity)?

Ahead of our workshop session please put some thought into your element (open session detail for the group allocation), doing relevant research on relevant case studies or examples you want to highlight as part of this discussion. Our hope is that you’ll take the time to come to this conversation with your peers able to go deeper into the element and help us understand deeply the issues at hand.

## About the session

### **What is Investment? Advancing the cause of open infrastructure can come in a variety of ways.**

While there are those who advocate for a simple increase in funding as the solution to funding infrastructure, we believe investment is more than just funding, but includes making non-monetary resources available as well as the organizational capacity to utilize both of these to develop, maintain, and grow their services.

Help us think through these key elements of investment: **funding**, **non-monetary resources**, and **organizational capacity** by exploring the following questions:

- How should we define each element?
- What is the value of each element in the overall investment "portfolio" we should be considering?
- What are the dangers when they come into imbalance (excess or scarcity)?

Of particular value to us is better understanding how we would assess, evaluate, and communicate the key elements of each to the various stakeholders we seek to support (funders, providers, and users).

### **Task**

In this exercise, you will discuss one of these three elements (funding, non-monetary resources, and organizational capacity) in your assigned groups (listed below) and prepare a short presentation (5-7 minutes) that summarizes:

- Your working definition of the element with clarifying examples
- The importance of this element in the success of an organization and the research and scholarly community as a whole
- How this element relates to the other two elements
- Any potential dangers/concerns surfaced in your conversation about this element
