The 2023 IBSF World Championships in bobsleigh and skeleton is promising to be one of its most competitive editions in years, with victory anything but assured for the plethora of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics champions on show.
As if that wasn't enough, the event will take place on the picturesque natural ice track of St. Moritz in Switzerland, 26 January - 5 February, meaning there will be some fast times.
In bobsleigh, four-time Olympic gold medallist Francesco Friedrich will go into both the two and four-man events in the unfamiliar position of underdog, while women's reigning Olympic champions in Kaillie Humphries and Laura Nolte are neck-and neck in the World Cup rankings.
In skeleton, men’s Olympic champion Christopher Grotheer and his compatriot Tina Hermann are the favourites, but the chasing pack continue to close the gap on those German greats.
Below we take a look at the schedule and stars to watch for the event, that also includes a World Championships debut for para bobsleigh.
2023 IBSF World Championships: Men's bobsleigh stars to watch
Germany’s Francesco Friedrich is the reigning double two-man and four-man Olympic champion, and has won a whopping 13 world titles.
But the GOAT will have his work cut out defending those titles in 2023, as he currently sits second in both events in the World Cup rankings.
His compatriot Johannes Lochner, who settled for silver at Beijing 2022 and so many other events over the years, currently leads the two-man rankings and may finally win the world crown.
Brad Hall and his British teammates have been in sensational form this season and are the shock, joint four-man World Cup leaders with Friedrich, following their impressive three victories.
That includes winning their nation’s first ever European Championships title last weekend in Altenberg, which is an amazing feat if you consider that there is no sliding track in Great Britain.
2023 World Championships: Women's bobsleigh stars to watch
In the women’s ranks, the first-ever monobob Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries looks to be the favourite in that event, but only just.
In the rankings the USA athlete sits just 65 points above Lillehammer 2016 Youth Olympic Games champion Laura Nolte, who will feel confident after winning the two-woman Olympic title in Beijing 2022.
Nolte is second in this season’s two-women World Cup as well, just behind German compatriot Kim Kalicki, while Humphries is also in touch in third.
2023 IBSF World Championships: Para bobsleigh stars to watch
The first ever IBSF para bobsleigh world champion will be announced in 2023, with the sport making it's debut.
Some of the top names from the circuit that will have their eye on the top prize are Guillermo Castillo and Robert Balk of the USA, Team GB's Corie Mapp, Israel Blanco of Spain, Jonas Frei of Switzerland, and the ultra-experienced Lonnie Bissonnette of Canada.
