# Goals and Expectations A note to clarify individual's goals and expectations from the project so that we can work together to try and meet these (e.g. maybe one of us wants to learn leadership, and another wants to concentrate on technicals, we can adjust accordingly). Suggestion - please answer the following. Please be honest and selfish! ### What I want out of the 16 week OLS project ### What I want out of the Hub23 project beyond OLS ### What I'd like my role in the project be ### What I expect from other members. --- **Callum**: ### What I want out of the 16 week OLS project My personal goals are the following: - more confidence in what best practice in open source is - more confidence knowing how to exhibit these in projects, improve open leadership skills. - a better mental model of the software behind jupyterhub and binderhub. - know how these could be best used to further open research ### What I want out of the Hub23 project beyond OLS - I'd like to continue learning about the software behind jupyter/binder hub. And it would be really cool to contribute upstream and make connections in the wider open source community (e.g. the binder lot). I'm not particularly thinking career-wise since I don't want my future job to be solely in software. But open-source infrastructure is cross-cutting, and I learn loads (and get inspired by) attending open source communities. - I'd like to get Hub23 to a state where it can be actively used and advocated for. And then I'd like to turn my attention to how people should use it in our projects. - basically, I'm expecting to continue to work on hub23 & binder, and that they will be the focal points of the open source service area, which will grow over time. - I'd like this to be my only extra-curricular work for the next 6 months at least. ### What I'd like my role in the project be - I guess I've been taking more of a leading role so far due to my previous knowledge of binder and because the initial motivation for the project came from me. I feel responsible for the project so I think will naturally be motivated to push it forward and take more of a leading role. But I want to get better at open leadership, which is very non-hierarchical and does it's best to get everyone contributing in the way that they want to. So my hope is that in time the project feels like it doesn't have a leader, rather it has a collection of people working on it in the manner that they want to. - I want to spend the majority of my time in the project doing technical development. ### What I expect from other members. - I think the minimum I expect is accountability and the occasional chat about ideas. If projects get in the way and there isn't time to do more than that, that is totally fine, this project is an optional extra and any time spent is appreciated but I will not get resentful or annoyed if other things get in the way. - Of course I'd love it if this develops into a truly collaborative project where we are all working on the technical development and then on advocacy to the wider group. But this is a hope not an expectation. --- **Luke:** ### What I want out of the ~~16~~ 6 week OLS project My personal goals are: - To involve myself in a technical open source project. I find the most difficult thing in joining an ongoing (+voluntary/extra-curricular) project is finding the time to really commit to it in such a way as to upskill and reach the required level to meaningfully contribute, despite best intentions. This project (+OS Service Area) will hopefully provide the opportunity & motivation to devote the required time to Binder/Hub23. - To learn / implement best practice in software development, app maintenance & reliability, open source & distributed development - I *genuinely* think Hub23/Binder is a worthwhile & potentially impactful platform, so having a positive / lasting impact on the Turing would be nice... ### What I want out of the Hub23 project beyond OLS - Similar to above. I want OLS to provide the impetus to get Hub23 started and build momentum for ongoing contributions to the project + the rest of the open source service area. I'd be happy if this was the only/majority of my service area allocation for the foreseeable future. ### What I'd like my role in the project be - I'm primarily interested in the technical aspects (development, deployment, maintenance, etc.) at the moment as I think there is a huge amount to learn here. - I'd be happy to act as an advocate for Hub23/Binder once a reasonable level of technical expertise has been built up. ### What I expect from other members. - I think Callum's answer covers this very well. Honestly, there is no minimum expectation from other members other than a positive, collaborative approach and a similar expectation of commitment.
