# Managing the HPC Curriculum ## Moderator(s) Alan O'Cais — University of Barcelona Marc-André Hermanns — RWTH Aachen University ## Abstract "HPC Carpentry is the first entry to the Carpentries Lesson Program Incubator. As such it has a proposed core curriculum, which will be outlined at the beginning of this session. HPC Carpentry exists in an ecosystem that is constantly developing however. Beyond the core curriculum, we would like to discuss other existing and proposed lessons that are relevant to HPC Carpentry and how to adequately integrate them so that they complement the core and each component is sufficiently maintained. Questions we would like to address are: * Anchoring the discussion: our learner profiles and the core curriculum * How can we promote the adoption/adaption of the HPC Carpentry core curriculum? * How do we foster engangement of instructors for core topics taking them beyond their own specific interests? * How to spread engagement for specialized topics that are initiated by single instructors or small groups? * How to integrate HPC Carpentry in the training initiatives that are being funded in the wider HPC ecosystem (including large initiatives such as ACCESS-CI in the US and EuoHPC-JU in Europe, but perhaps more importantly regional HPC training initiatives) Perhaps also, how to do the reverse?" # Organising ourselves (1h30) - Prepare a MarkDown document - **We** probably need to document the workshop ourselves - Whoever is not presenting should be taking notes - Socrative/Mentimeter (or similar tool) to help trigger discussions ## Introducing * Lightning introduction of HPC Carpentry (10) * Include learner profiles * Review issues related to incubation (10) * In particular * [Contributions](https://github.com/hpc-carpentry/coordination/issues/134) * Maintainers (at least three) are needed * What is our (carpentries?) governance model for the lesson repos? * * [Teaching](https://github.com/hpc-carpentry/coordination/issues/135) ## Discussion part * Does the core curriculum cover what you expect it to? (20 mins) * What about non-core topics? * Mentimeter questions: * How will does the curriculum match your expectations of what should be presented to a novice user * Allow a spectrum of possibilities (whatever the tool allows) * Vote up everything you like in the curriculum * Three lessons are options * Provide free-form answer? * Discussion questions * Beyond the basic curriculum * What does collaboration look like for this scenario? * How can we promote the adoption/adaption of the HPC Carpentry core curriculum? (20 mins) * Mentimeter questions * Where are you from? * Be specific in terms of what is important to you * Free-form * Where do you use HPC? * Institutional * Regional * National * International * Discussion questions * Who are the right targets for adoption? * What is currently preventing you from contributing? * * What would it take at your location? * * Need success stories...and evangelists * What does critical mass look like? * On-boarding document needs to be created (20 mins) * How many roles do we need? * Is a drop-in session required? * Many variables (local HPC resouces vs. Magic Castle) * HPC brings complications * Administration & Manage "common" pitfalls 10 minutes for buffer/wrapup ---- ## What outcome do we want? * We need multipliers * Helpers/lurkers for the upcoming BioNT HPC Carpentry workshop (December) * Need them to provide helpers with a view to being instructors themselves * Would people host a workshop? * What are the barriers to this? * Courses may be rough around the edges # Notes * The Snakemake workflow tool may be a turn-off * At least remove it from the name!
