context
I am member of a charitable association/club in Berlin, Germany, called Alte Gießerei Berlin (AGB). The association hosts various workspaces such as woodworking, metalworking, photography (analog lab), sowing, upholstery, and shared office/desk space. There is also a small courtyard and in Summer there are concerts occasionally and there is a yearly arts exhibition.
The members are a diverse group of people. Some are there very regularly, some are there infrequently. Some use the workspaces as professionals/freelancers, some members use it as a hobby with recreational intent. Some participate actively in administrative work and other chores, some are standing more on the sidelines.
values and practices
Members are proficient and have high expertise in handwork techniques, but they do less operate in an educational setting and no OER is actively sought and used. Teaching primarily functions in person-to-person interactions as the need arises. However, there are occasional workshops with smaller group setting (4-12 people) where workshop-specific topics are taught.
So, it is a space where individuals pursue their own projects, but it is also a space where learning takes place individually or in groups.
Within the AGB association, there is a spirit of learning, sharing and community that I feel is very much aligned with the vision and communal spirit of Creative Commons. But at this point, pretty much all is happening in the analog realm within the AGB.
challenge: from "analog" to "digital"
A fundamental question that I have is if and how the association could transform and preserve the spirit and learning that is already present in the analog and extend it to the digital realm. CC licenses would be a good match for the association to reach out into the world with digital assets, because "CC icons have become ubiquitous symbols for sharing, openness, and human collaboration."
The digital assets that I am envisioning would essentially mirror the association's analog activities, for example:
- streaming and recording of concerts
- preserving knowledge from workshops with video footage, images and how-to documents
- documenting maintenance and repair of woodworking and sowing machines
- producing an image library of standard parts – think stock photography/footage for technical nerds

– such as humble bolts and nuts (e.g., DIN 934 M6 hex nut) that can be used in build-documentations (because typically such images are ARR copyrighted and/or don't have an explicit license)
The spectrum of CC licenses would hopefully enable to find suitable matches that resonates with the association's content producers. For example, recordings of concerts may have NC and/or ND license elements, whereas an image library of standard parts may be more permissive with CC Zero or CC BY.
potential impact
Funding the workspaces has been feasible so far with mostly membership fees, but rents in Berlin are rising fast and the association is struggling to preserve a solid financial basis. Because of this, it is vital to secure additional funding and to further establish the association as community hub that the city wants to preserve.
Strategically releasing content with CC licenses could have a positive impact on the association, for example:
- attracting funding: There are increasing funding opportunities for spaces that offer education and community around sustainability such as repair workshops, DIY and fab labs. For example, the city of Berlin has the Re-use Berlin initiative. Hamburg has the Fab City Hamburg initiative. If there is public funding it is prudent make content based on this funding open access (OA) and OER anyways – CC licenses are a natural choice.
- more visibility/recognition to attract new members: Increasing the digital presence of the association should increase reach, both locally and globally. The digital content in combination with CC licenses opens up new and unforeseen collaboration and could attract people that are in line with AGB's values. The attribution requirement of CC licenses can serve as "branding" (perhaps requesting to use the association's logo when attributing.)
- more visibility in the local community: Political parties increasingly are recognizing the importance to preserve community spaces. Strengthening the perception and evidence that the association helps people to connect and educate themselves may prevent gentrification of the association. For example, in Berlin and Germany there is a severe lack of young people that want to pick up skilled labor jobs. The association has already some experience in giving young (and disadvantaged) people a hands-on experiences with workshops that may spark interest into these kind of jobs.
strategy and action: the road head
To introduce and establish the practice of CC licensing within the association, the following strategies can be pursued:
- identify key people: Talk to people personally that are likely to already know or appreciate CC's ideas and solicit feedback. For example, there is a professional photographer on AGB's board – it's likely that he knows about CC licensing, but he probably has not thought about how CC could be leveraged within the association.
- licensing talk/workshop: Offer a short talk about CC, or a longer CC workshop. There is a monthly membership meeting and at the beginning I could give a short talk. The talk/workshop should anticipate different kinds of attitudes. For example, "cautious members" may feel more at ease with NC and/or ND license options. Generally, it seems prudent to have members pick the license, but it could be argued that the spirit of the association is represented best with CC BY or CC BY-SA.
- set examples: One approach is convincing others to start using CC, but it more powerful to lead by example. This means that I would have to start producing CC-licensed content and engage about it with other members.
- assemble a production team: A major problem are lack of time and expertise to produce high-quality (OER) content. Within the association there are many different skills that can be leveraged to assemble a production team of interested members.
