IT's what got me into computers. I was there for about a year on two. ## Intermediate Helped fixing Laptops and anything that needed IT support. Got given one of the schools firewalls Dell *Edge* box Linux at home! It was pretty cool! ## Club Penguin Got into private service community for a game called club penguin. It actually really helped. I needed to understand redis, portfording, webserver. From running a node for a kids game?! After that I started moving on to NodeJS and got really into backend development. Servers for myself, rest-apis etc. AT that time as well I was doing web dev and CSS frameworks. Developing websites online for folks for $$! Now I chill! ## Jo @ NZ Open Source Society NZOSS is a Champion for OSS software and development, it is an OSS organization, we love for people to join and contribute. We are about supporting Open Source Projects with Love and allyship, helping projects along, providing connections, learning opportunities and promoting NZ OS brilliance... oh and there are also some services that we run which are open source produts for people to use or tryout (and then we can assist with setting up instances) for example: - last year NZOSS spun up big blue button during lockdown 1. - It's an Open Source Zoom! - Free to use and we have some number of folks use it (250+ organization / some Maori and it's now used be several universities in NZ) - So we don't get cut off when zoom calls go beyond 40min - benefits of Open Source - private - secure - not recorded (unless you want) - data soverignty - CatalystIT supports with hosting - including Big Blue Button - it is truly a data sovergity project - Only in NZ! - on shore hosting! - Link to the services on offer from NZOSS: https://nzoss.nz/online-services - Link to next NZOSS countrywide meetup: The last online FOSS meetup was CHC + WLG together. On the 2nd Tuesday at 20:00 on BBB https://bbb.nzoss.nz/b/dav-rqm-3fq I expect same for next month. Also we (as of now at least) welcome all to chat.nzoss.nz ### Relationships Part of our discussion today was changing of gaurd to a degree. We've been doing some work contributing. Rob Technically, and Jo on the sides, community, design. Being part of the ecosystem or DAO, a node in the network of the the biggest open, democratic, global innovation fund. See https://cardanocataly.st/ We are working on proposals for fund 6, which is for around 3 million dollars (to check). One of the proposals is to translate the documents for onboarding into Cardano generally, Stakepool set-up, + Catalyst (the innovation fund https://cardanocataly.st/ which is different to Catalyst IT here in NZ https://www.catalyst.net.nz/) currently there are contributions coming from: - Korea - Japan - Vietnam Rob and I were talking wouldn't it be amazing if there was also Te Reo. [Catalyst](https://cardanocataly.st/) is an open source fund to create economic well being, distributed control, to people on the ground running the projects for wellbeing. (Jo likes 'human flourishing' better:) It doesn't come with the strings attached of working with the NZ govt, regardless of level. It's completely separate infrastructure – designed, built, run for governance of resource allocation (via ADA, the digital currency which is the third largest globally after Bitcoin, Ethereum) and the digital infrastructure we rely on. There is a peice of work Rob's done to create something that similar to the work Indi is doing... a markdown tool which provides the text in english so its easy to translate. He's tried to make it simple as possible to do that interpretation. Some sharing might be possible on what he's already setup. An opportunity for someone to jump in and contribute to the community, become part of the global network and the Venture Activation Centre / incommons.nz project we're working on for Aotearoa which Rob ( Ngāti Kahungunu, Nga Ruahine, Ngāti Ruanui) and Jo (He hononga Ngati Hangarau, Ngati Ranginui ) are working on. We are lookiing for – someone who is interested in the digital innovation, data soverignty, design and community to translate from english to Te Reo, so we can introduce more whanau into the network and design economic identity and tools for economic empowerment which are tailored to the specific tikanga of whanau, hapu and iwi. - smart contracts - open innovation - etc Jo connecting us to invite us to attend the Eastern Hemisphere Townhall meetup. It's usually at midnight NZ time every Thursday. It's a lot about Mr Rogers and the TV network he created. It's a lot about the philosophical statement. Move funding to local places. It would be good to look at this time in front of congress. If you wanna know me (Hippie), if you wanna know ii. Look towards Mr Rogers. My favourite is _do you want to me by neighbour?_ There was a beautiful piece where his wife Joanne was talking about the time in front of congress. The senator was like "I'm tired of hearing people read their statements." Joanne could hear how nervous he was in his voice. > Fred :: Senator Pastore, this is a philisophical statement that would take about ten minutes to read. So, I won't do that. One of the first things that a child learns in a healthy family is trust, and I trust what you have said, that you will read this. It's very important to me. I care deeply about children. My first... > Senator Pastore interrupting in a patronizing voice :: "Will it make you happy if you read it?" (followed by laghter in the room) > Fred :: I'd just like to talk about it it's alright. My first program was on WQED fifteen years ago. Along with this philisophical statment, Fred presented a childrens song. These things that Mr Rogers brought to his nation... What's fun is at the end of the video is that ... One thing that we did was run some slides on some 13m of monitors. **_demo of presentation_** Discussion about Inkscape, Blender, etc... Maui Hangarau Jay: Talked to Hippie about the setting up Hippie: This is the example about the timing of things that have just aligned. The new leadership ... is ... I meet with Her once a week, we do the strategic organising for the CNCF. She said that she couldn't make it to the event. Then She ends up showing up anyway. None of the people on the call were technical. As we're setting up for the event, there's an enterence for the Marae and a Haka is playing on a screen.... Going through her journey of becoming the GM of the CNCF... Bill M.'s objective is to increase the contribution of folks in the southern hemnisphere. Someone who studied arabic .... **_picture of talking to Priyanka and of screen setup from event_** Many many many screens. JJ Ashgar who is at IBM was the winner of the laptop. Hippie: Encoraging people to see behond the coin. Fred's Grandmother said When the world's hard, look for the helpers. For those who choose to go down that path, that's their choice. That's just i things. I'm here for ii things. You will always find people who are helpful. # Open Source Software doesn't have Validation Jo : I wrote a piece in 2012/13, was asked about my insights from being a new NZ resident. They were: It's biggest strength is it's Entrepenerial talent... it's also it's biggest weakness. Everyone wants to do their own thing. Decide we want to re-invent the wheel. The weight of (really good) engineering, and lack of funding for public good, means the projects stall and money gets wasted. This is how we do it... use open source and let's not throw everything* away and start again (*including the 1000's of hours of engineering that has gone in to make sure OS software is secure, compliant like the seatbelts are in working order, ha!) # Blueprint Publishing for Architecture - [FreeCAD](https://www.freecadweb.org/) [OpeningDesign](http://openingdesign.com/) > An (uberly) transparent and open source architectural studio.* Their work is public and can be found on [GitLab](https://gitlab.com/openingdesign) and [GitHub](https://github.com/OpeningDesign). They also use [Blender](https://www.blender.org/) to create walk through renders of their work. # Forgot to send this earlier lol Here are some cool links regarding my Club Penguin beginnings: Club Penguin Private Server (HTML5): https://play.cprewritten.net/ Club Penguin Private Server (original Adobe Flash mediaserver with a custom Emulator): https://cpbeyond.net (requires to use the Electron client since Flash Player no longer exists in web browsers) The emulator - written in Python!
