# Draft Explainer ## What is Hex.Camp? Hex.Camp is an open source project that is building software tools and web hosting infrastructure for individuals and groups to enrich their local communities. Using traditional web tools, we built a unique system of organizing web sites based on geography and a tiling hexagon grid that enables people to collaborate and self-host under a non-profit model. ## Connecting Websites to Geography using Hexagons A traditional website has a domain name, eg. google.com or wikipedia.org. A local city government website might use the name of the city ... eg. victoria.ca is the website for the City of Victoria, in Canada. Most website names give no clue about what city or country they are located in. Hex.Camp is different. Every website that uses the Hex.Camp software has a physical location on Earth. We do this using hexagons. We use a system called "H3" (originally developed by Uber) that divides the surface of the planet into a continuous grid of hexagons, and gives each of them a number. The H3 system starts at "resolution 0" by dividing the world into 122 hexagons, each of which is large enough to cover a large area of a continent. There are another 15 levels of resolution, where each 664 trillion hexagons ##
