# How to negotiate effectively
In the previous video we saw the importance of achieving win-win outcomes in your negotiations. This is a conscious decision you should make to ensure you build long lasting relationships with your customers. You don't want them to feel like they got the worse end of the deal!
Having said that, we do want to show you how to negotiate when you absolutely need to get your way.
"Never split the difference" is a well known book on negotiation skills by Chris Voss (a former FBI negotiator). In simple terms, the phrase 'never split the difference' refers to not settling for less than what you intended to get before starting the negotiation.
In a nutshell, here's the strategy:
- First empathize with their situation and try to get a "that's right!"
- Explain your situation and ask them to help you solve your problem
- Repeat
This simple technique is super powerful. The trick is feeling the other person feel heard before you explain your problem so they're more receptive.
You can use this technique both in your personal life and when interacting with customers at any stage of the funnel.
