# juniko (modifeid by jan Itan) **Sitelen Pona** is a logographic writing system used to write the constructed language **Toki Pona**. Both the language and the script were created by Sonja Lang and are documented in her book, *Toki Pona: The Language of Good*. The section of the book describing the logography and used as a source for this proposal is made available to the public under the CC0 1.0 Universal public domain dedication (specified on page 3 of the German edition, *Toki Pona: Die Sprache des Guten*). The 2014 Toki Pona book includes 120 words in its dictionary and assigns each one a ideographs. In 2021, Sonja published *Toki Pona Dictionary*, which is a collection of common phrasings for English words collected from community surveys. The survey responses included a number of community-created words not included in the original book. 17 of these were found to be in common use and designated *nimi ku suli* (important words from *Toki Pona Dictionary*). They are generally accepted as part of the language. The community has created ideographs for all of them. This proposal includes a codepoint for each word in *Toki Pona: The Language of Good* and each *nimi ku suli*, as well as a few codepoints for words not meeting these criteria with glyphs in many existing fonts. The script has several features for formatting and combining glyphs. * Foreign names are written in the logography using a rebus-type system in a cartouche. Inside a cartouche, each glyph represents the first letter of the corresponding word. For example: ![](https://jan-ne.github.io/tp/ma_Kanata.png) The cartouche is encoded using the codepoints SITELEN PONA START OF CARTOUCHE and SITELEN PONA END OF CARTOUCHE. START OF CARTOUCHE is analagous to an opening parenthesis and END OF CARTOUCHE is analagous to a closing parenthesis. This can be rendered using chaning contextual lookups by adding lines above and below the glpyhs between SITELEN PONA START OF CARTOUCHE and SITELEN PONA END OF CARTOUCHE, allowing the enclosed look that can be seen above. It is possible for fonts to render cartouches with the above system alone, however a supplimental encoding (COMBINING CARTOUCHE EXTENSION) is also defined, and can be used to encode cartouches more explicitly. This makes an encoding available even in applications that don't support advanced features, and also simplifies the tables required to render combination glyphs inside of cartouches/containers. COMBINING CARTOUCHE EXTENSION is a combining character that modifies the previous glyph (drawing lines above and below). * The word "pi" can be written as a container, due to its function of grouping modifiers. For example: ![](https://i.imgur.com/Ex1rOx9.png) Several other words can be written in a similar way, containing information related to the opening word. For example: ![](https://i.imgur.com/OeaLIkr.png) When written this way, the codepoint for the desired container glpyh is written first, followed by SITELEN PONA COMBINING START OF CONTAINER, followed by the contents of the container, followed by SITELEN PONA END OF CONTAINER. This is rendered by 1) changing the desired container glpyh into its container varient (hense COMBINING) which is determined by fonts, and 2) adding an underline to the glyphs between SITELEN PONA COMBINING START OF CONTAINER and SITELEN PONA END OF CONTAINER. Similar to the cartouches above: the container glyphs can be encoded with the system described above, but an alternative excplicit encoding also exists. COMBINING LONG GLYPH EXTENSION is a combining character that modifies the previous glyph, drawing a line below. * Adjacent glyphs representing noun-adjective pairs may be combined into one glyph. ![](https://jan-ne.github.io/tp/combined_glyphs.png) This is normally accomplished using a ZWJ pair, which a font may render however it chooses. If more control is desired over the rendering of the combination, SITELEN PONA STACKING JOINER or SITELEN PONA SCALING JOINER may be used in place of a ZWJ. These correspond to the two methods of joining glyphs: * STACKING JOINER specifies that the second glyph should be stacked on top of the first glyph. * SCALING JOINER specifies that the second glyph should be scaled and placed inside the first glyph. Note that the way joined glyphs are rendered will depend on font support. Some fonts may not support joining glyphs at all, in which case all the joiners are ignored and the symbols are rendered ordinarily. ## Sources Original hackmd page:
